Low level walks in Fort William area?
« on: 08:22:35, 13/07/18 »

We're off south on a family camping trip tomorrow, to camp in Glen Nevis for a few days.

The forecast isn't so good for the higher hills. so any suggestions for good low level walks within say half an hour's drive of Fort William; 10 miles or so (preferably circular)?

The start of the Great Glen Way in Fort William to Neptunes Staircase isn’t very long but flat if it’s a wet weather day.

Thanks Bricam; I had forgotten about the Caledonian Canal.

Glen Nevis itself. Take the WHW path up from nr the campsite up to the forest track and then follow the track to the lower falls. From there you could continue along the bank up towards the end car park. You join the road for about 1/4 mile before the car park and you could then walk through to Steall falls. Return via the same route.

A bit further afield you could drive up Loch Arkaig, park up at Strathan and walk as far as you want to up Glen Dessary or towards Pean, or drive up to Kinlochourn and walk the 6 mile track to Barrisdale and return via the same route.

I know you preferred circular but that's all I can think of!.

At one time you could get a bus to Kinlochhourn, walk to Barrisdale and over the Bealach to Inverie, catch the ferry to Mallaig and then the train to Fort Bill, this made a good day of it. I'm not sure the bus runs anymore.

After a morning spent half heartedly fingering Gore Tex in Fort William; stiff after the previous days struggle up and down the Ben Nevis treadmill, we took a walk up through the Glen Nevis gorge to Steall waterfall; stunning, especially the upper boulder choked gorge.
