Bhod - I take it winter trousers negate the need for thermal legs underneath?

Yep, the Montane Super Terras are made of a much thicker material, fairly water resistant and windproof, only on the very coldest of days would I consider the need to wear some thermals underneath them.
I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake.

I have running leggings which I have occasionally worn under my walking trousers and they make a huge difference to how warm I am.

Cheers Bhod, though hopefully I won't need to go down the winter trousers route, if I can help it.

Ridge - cheers. Running leggings are usually lycra too aren't they?

Yes, but without the cotton content of regular ladies leggings so probably not as warm but better at wicking and quicker drying. I'm fairly sure that Primark do them in their fitness range so they don't have to be expensive.

I'm thinking they're probably the same or very similar to my yoga leggings - there's no cotton content in those either.

Never tried leggings other that riding a motor bike up and down the line in winter, back in the early 80s. Then it was woolly long johns and still freezing.  ;D

For walking I have different trousers for different conditions.  O0

Ninthace - a submarine guy eh?  That explains a lot  ;)

In service parlance he's a fish-head, not a submarine guy.

If he was from Porthleven he would be fish head and guts.

I started as a fish head by ended up a crab. I have also been a tea bag and a basket weaver.

To the OP - both.
I mix and match between types of trousers and a pair of merino thermals depending on weather and activity.

A lot of the winter, I'll be wearing Paramo salopettes style trousers which are fine on their own for cool weather or high activity, and can add the thermals for extreme cold or low activity.
