Garmin 66i
« on: 19:52:22, 28/09/20 »
Hi, I have a 66i with 1:50000 topo maps, are the 1:25000 any better on this screen?

If those are Garmin maps then yes, the 25000 are better but both blur as you zoom in as they are raster maps, so basically copies of paper maps.  There are numerous free OSM maps available and they are vector maps, so no blurring as you zoom in.  I've used them for years in preference to the Garmin ones.

I use Garmins BirdsEye Imagery 25000 OS maps on my Etrex.   They do not blur as you zoom - good up to 80m/cm scale and readable at 50m/cm

Even those maps are raster maps, and aren't as sharp as you zoom in. On some screens that may not be so obvious and they are certainly better than the 50K ones.

Depends if you want the whole of UK or just parts of it.  If the latter I'd get the Birdseye Select mentioned above as you can buy a certain allowance and download whatever you want.

If you can afford the Garmin GB TOPO Pro buy it from somewhere reputable as the cheapo copies on flea bay etc may have poor quality map tiles, contain outdated mapping and may not load in your device or all of the above :( . If you do risk buying one, make sure they have an effective returns policy for a refund!

The OS online shop has this at an eye watering £334.99 :o

As sussamb says current free mapping based on Open Street Map is fairly usable these days e.g. OpenTopo map. https://opentopomap.org/#map=13/54.16555/-2.39399

You could also take a subscription out to OS maps and use it on your phone as a back up and to print out map sections. You could also grab a screen shot of a map section on Bing, georeference the image as an overlay in Google Earth and then save and upload it to your Garmin as a KMZ custom map to navigate.
