Beddgelert & The Snowdonia Marathon
« on: 18:55:46, 29/10/12 »
A trip to Beddgelert on the Welsh Highland Railway from Porthmadog to see the Snowdonia Marathon race followed by a walk above & around the village .  Saturday  27.10.2012

A walk i do quite often, ideal for a few hours in the afternoon or even a summers evening           5 miles     1,000 ft ascent

Rupert the Bear, Beddgelert's second most famous resident he lived here for many years, couldn't resist including the bear in a few pics !

Gelert the Faithful hound must be the village's best known resident

The Garret engine at Beddgelert

The engines were imported from South Africa

The creator of Rupert the Bear ...........

Alfred Bestall's cottage tucked away above Beddgelert he live here for many years

Many of Ruperts stories were inspired by & set around the village

The Snowdonia Marathon attracted 2,200 competitors

This years winner was local man Rob Samuel who completed it in  2 hrs 35 mins.

Good to see many of the runners wearing pink race numbers / vests in support of
April Jones family & our friends in Machynlleth at this sad time .

Looking down to the village from above the Aberglaslyn Pass

Good point to view the Welsh Highland Railway

Looks more like a Hornby 00 model set from up here

The old turret marks the top of Bryn Du , from this small hill there is a view of the Moelwyns, Rhinogs, Nantlle ridge , Moel Hebog & Snowdon , a better view than  some of the 2000 footers.

Cnicht & the Moelwyns

Tranquil waters south of the Aberglaslyn Bridge ,a area of NT land which nobody seems to walk

Some good Autumnal colours around the forest today

Aberglaslyn Pass

Narrow  Fishermans path above the Glaslyn

Long bridge over the Glaslyn

St Mary's church with Moel Hebog in the background

The site of Gelert's Grave

The yarn ....this must have sold so many postcards & tea towels in the village over the years

Charles Burton's painting of Gelert standing guard over the child with the dead wolf in the background

Statue of Gelert the faithful hound still standing guard in a ruin near to the grave

What an interesting report, thanks Tabbycat.

I knew of the story of the hound but had no idea the creator of Rupert Bear lived in Beddgelert.

I've marked your route down as a to do.  I've walked along the the Aberglaslyn river which was really enjoyable but came back a different way.

Lovely lovely.

Is the statue new?  First time I've seen that.

2 Hours 35 mins is an astonishing time for that course, for saying it includes the ascent of the Llanberis pass.  Wow.

The statue has been there quite a few years, its in a ruined building to the right of Gelert's grave, seems a favourite for the kids to sit on . Great walk for kids with the river & the faithful hound story & of course the ice cream parlour in the village, although seeing your two scamper up Yr Aran it might be a bit tame for them  O0

Nah, we've visited the doggy grave, as part of the Cwm Bychan circuit.
It seems I was informed about the statue back then, too! ...

I didn't see a metal Gelert, is it in the hut near the railway bridge at the edge of the meadow?
I saw an 'interpretive board' in there but we didn't go in.

Middle daughter would have liked to have seen a metal Gelert, she was quite taken with the story.

Enjoyed reading this TC.

Brought back some nice memories of a great walk I had there earlier in the year. I'm not a train spotter, but I enjoyed your shots of the steam trains... very very good!  O0

Thanks for the comments  O0

We have had a few snow / hail showers here the past few days so the top of Snowdon is wearing her winter coat & is looking rather good from the village today.

Brilliant photo's of the walk. I think I might like to do that one, and we have half a mind to stop in Bedgellert next time we visit Wales.  Gelert's story is also wonderful.  Thank you.  O0 :) :)
