Recommended campsites for walkers
« on: 19:55:51, 02/02/10 »
Let us attempt to create a useful list of campsites Forum members have found favourable to get a cheap place to pitch their tents.

I would suggest the following format:

- Name of Place and brief description of its nature.
- Location and contact details (be succinct).
- Price pppn.
- Pre-book or turn up?
- Facilites, laundry? hot water? showers? shop? (be succinct).

Perhaps we'll start by breaking the country down into the same sections as the Forum does, we can mutate it by general agreement to make it more useful as it develops.
Current Munro tally: 78 out of 282 completed so far.

All 190 Welsh Nuttalls completed.

Sorry to hi jack this thread. I joined the backpackers club some years ago. They give a handy farm pitch directory for members. Most camp sites are around 50p to £1 per night if you show members id. I'm not trying to advertise the club on here by any means, i just find for the £18 a year membership fee it is well worth it for cheap campsites fees.

For campsites i can recommend Crowden campsite in glossop, ideal for walking in the upper peak national park / derbyshire area and i believe around £6 per night in high season and £5 in low season.

Lakes - http://www.grizedale-camping.co.uk/ Lovely site in Grizedale Forest. Adequate showers etc. Can't remember exact price but remember it being fairly cheap for 5 of us in a large tent. Run by a very nice man who apologised to me for not coming around more often because it was in lambing season.

Wales - Cae Du, the one on the coast between Tywyn and Barmouth. No website, again pretty cheap. Stunning location overlooking the sea with Cadair Idris just behind. Occasionally you might hear the roar of the sea above the roar of the wind :)
Both allow campfires

We stayed at a few last year;
Scotland
Glen Nevis Campsite. We found it quiet, very clean and tidy. Hot showers, toilets, laundry, shop, great views. Didn't book. http://www.glen-nevis.co.uk/touring/index.htm

Wales
Cae Du Campsite Beddgelert. Clean & tidy, quiet, hot water, showers, toilet block, 10 minutes from the vilage. Booked before we went. Great for Hebog. A bit steep at £16 per night but an ideal spot. Would go again

England
Edale
Whitmore Lea Farm. what can I say about this place!! If you want a hot shower, clean tidy toilet block, power points, laundry and the like..............................well you best stay at home  ;D this is basic camping at £3 per night, Will defo be back there this year O0

Hinderwell/Whitby
Serenity Campsite. Another great site. Quiet, clean, hot showers, toilets, 2 pubs across the road. Great for the Cleveland Way. Another we hope to visit this year.

Wasdale head.
Beside the pub, you get the convenience of a public toilet in the parking area and thats it. Just a field and costs a couple of quid per head. Convenient if you want to spend timein the pub.
