The diving board
« on: 09:11:41, 26/05/13 »
Just a few thoughts about yesterdays walk. We started off from the forest carpark just up the road from Torpantau station and climbed up the steep ascent past the waterfalls onto Craig Y Fan Ddu. Some great views along this ridge which becomes Graig Fan Las. Looking across the valley toward Waun Rydd with binoculars we could see the memorial and wreckage of a Wellington bomber which crashed during the second world war. Just after this we turned left and headed west along the main beacons escarpment toward Fan Y Big, again some fantastic views along the way. Stopping for drinks and snacks from the backpack on Fan Y Big, we stood on the diving board and again admired the view and the drop into the valley floor a long way below. A friendly chap on his own kindly took a few snaps of us using our camera (still haven't sussed how to upload them here yet).  Climbing down the steep slope, at the bottom, instead of heading up Pen Y Fan we turned south west using a faint path (rather than the more commonly used path at the base of Tor Glas) heading for the upper Neaudd reservoir. Passing both the upper and lower reservoirs we joined the road for a short distance then bore left into the Taf Fechan Forest following the track back to Torpantau station. From here it's a short uphill walk to the carpark  a circular distance of around 8.5 miles. This was a cracking walk with just one steep section at the beginning and incredible views all the way, now I just need to upload the pictures  ;)
Touching from a distance, further all the time.
