Title: Evening walk Photos
Post by: midweekmountain on 13:09:13, 28/05/17
All my adult life I have been making the most of after work evenings, back in the day our focus was more climbing/bouldering, nowadays the pendalum has swung to the walking end of the spectrum.

Twice a week would see a manic after work race out of the city, meet up with friends followed by a punishing upper body workout, a must for adrenalin junkies like us, more rush than ten radical fairground rides.

Back to the car in the half light, tired and weary, red glow long gone, dew forming underfoot, white stars, well Venus, maybe Mars, as bats flit across darkening skies.

We are pub bound, a quick pint with mates, then back to the daily grind all to soon.

The hours of pre dawn and dusk are by far the best times of the day for photos so feel free to contribute your late in the day adventures complete with your golden hour photos..........

Curlew chick

On an evening walk round Darrowgill in North Yorkshire movement caught my eye it was a small chick ducking between clumps of heather. I look closer,  there are three of them trapped between us and a wall.  I move in and take a quick snap, the parents arrive, two magnificent curlews circling round us.

They are obviously distressed so we retreat quickly and leave them in peace.

This description makes me all bleary eyed.
I don't have a photo unfortunately but the view West just now is of a really fabulously coloured sky. I'm sure it's something similar to that on the cover of ' Hotel California ' ... I just need to be a bit more adept with the camera to do it justice  :(

To make em SPECIAL you need a SPECIAL subject.........YES, just like that TREE on the hotel californian cover.

Agreed O0  so do mine.

Elsewhere on this forum a reference to Mur y Niwl stirred a memory for me, of standing out in the void with wisps of mist around my ankles. I think that weekend we climbed the white line on the A5 from the the Douglas Arms, Bethesda to Tyn y Maes all of 2.5 miles. The large lorries of Aber Carriers were returning to base, perhaps were should have been pasted to the centre-line of the road like squashed hedgehogs.

When we reached our cottage at Tyn y Maes, I suggested the road surface was too difficult to climb directly to the cottage door so we climbed to the south side of the road then rigged climbing ropes to do a Hintertoisser traverse across to the other side. As we removed the ropes from between the telegraph poles one last Aber Carrier wagon came roaring down the Nant Francon pass. I still feel ashamed today that I made the suggestion that could have changed a foolhardy venture into a tragedy.

However the sound of our laughter echoing off the hillsides and probably heard as far as Ogwen Cottage still rings in my ears.

An "evening walk" along the road from Wasdale youth hostel towards Wasdale Head. After a rainy day, the sun came out and gave me lovely views of the surrounding hills including, in the photo, Yewbarrow, Kirk Fell, Great Gable and Lingmell and then further round more of Scafell Pike and Scafell.

One of the subjects for photo comps this year is reflections so on our evening walks this year we have been making a point of walking by water.

Got some great shots here are a few of the also rans.

This summer we seem to be choosing to walk by water a lot on an evening, this pair were taken at Evestones if anyone on here knows it. The main footpath in the area is the Ripon Rowel.

On this night we arrived just too late, missing the best of the light, had to make do with these shots.

We went back an hour earlier a couple of nights later and got some keepers!!!!!

The Peacocks (A)ss

This evening walk was alomg the embankment in the Howardian Hills if anyone on here knows it.

Back in the day it was one of my fave running areas so I know it well BUT have not been here for a while. I have never really been impressed with the landscape photos taken hereabouts so on this night we concentrated on other subjects.

To finish off we went down to Nunnington Hall which was closed BUT we wandered round the outer gardens coming across a very impressive Peacock who raised up his magnificent display feathers for us.

Now everyone is familiar with the classic peacock front view BUT this was the first time I have seen or had chance to phuto the Peacocks (a)ss which is almost as impressive.

Its that time again and its a bumper crop this year.

A nice photo of the poppies MWM, and an unusual one of the peacock too.  I must admit I am not a great lover of your "arty" shots.  They are very cleverly done and I know that a lot of people like them, but they are not to my taste and personally I prefer a photo to look natural.

Thanks for the feedback Dave, please feel free to add future comments-one thing you learn very quickly when you start entering photo comps or exhibiting photos is that you are ALWAYS gonna get critised so I am well used to it.

You cannot keep all of the people happy all the time!!!!!!!

The one thing that frustrates me about folks who post photos on here is that many look so samey they post a walk report with up to 20 distant pure landscapes.

No people shots, no wildlife, no close ups, scrolling though 20 average landscapes when one good snap would tell the story at a glance.

When I go on a walk I always feel that I am surrounded by many interesting subjects so my objective rightly or wrongly has been to always try and add variety tp my posts, here is an example from an old post.

The object of this post was to use my photo backlog too generate a bit of variety to the forum so there would be a little something for everyone with an interest in walking.

Subjects covered:-

Skye Ridge walk, Walking in Sardinia, Sea Canoeing in Sardinia, Lake District Landscapes, Scrambling in thr Peak District, Bouldering at Brimham, Ilkey Landscape, Rannock Moor Landscape, Scottish winter mountaineering, Walking in Shropshire, Munro Bagging, Scottish Island Landscapes,, Vintage Cars, Welsh Landscapes, Geology, Walks in the Yorkshire Wolds, Canadian Wildlife, Urban Landscapes, Classic Rock Climbing in the Lakes, Blue Bell vistas, Scottish Ridgewalking, Live music, Seascape photos, Ornithology Photos, Walks in London, Pie eating, Architectural photos, Gritstone Landscape, Hunting photos, Sea cliff climbing, Subterranian walking, Natural History, Train Spotting, Breaking News stories, Poppy Fields, Mountaineering in the USA, Scottish Rock Climbing, Walking in the North Yorkshire Moors, Walking in Northern Scotland, East Coast Landscapes, Photos of my 'Shed of the Year', White water Kayaking, Gypsy horse fair photos, Scrambling walk in Langdale, Lavender Landscapes, Animal  action photos,  and finally walking in the Yorkdhire Dales.

This photo was taken on an early Edinburgh morning golden hour when the shadows were still long.

Last year I got chance to visit the Natural History and Science museums in London something  had wanted to for decades. I found the experience very dissapointing, the crowds, the tired exhibitions not dusted for years.

Probably the worst thing was being directed round a series of brightly colored display placards each with distincly average photo(s) and supporting text, add a couple of interactive computer screens and they call it an exhibition.......Very cheap and unsatisfactory.

I was glad to get out of the place.....

Anyhow, with great trepidation I agreed to go round the Scottish Museum in Edinburgh, I was amazed, its housed in a sensational building with fresh, modern,.....clean.........AND............ genuine exhibits.

The day flew past and all to soon the tannoy was calling time and kicking us out.

whatever  ::) ::) ::)

I'm probably not the only person but I'd far rather see 20 "average" landscape photos than 1 obvious photoshopped (or stolen) photo.

I'd far rather see someone's photo taken in misty conditions at the top of the hill than enhanced photos because that's not the way the eye sees them. I want to see photos from peoples walks even if it's not up to your standards, I'm sorry that we're not worthy.

It's a walking forum anyway...not a photography (look everyone at my photos and praise me) forum  O0

'Soaking up the ambiance'

Had a recent walking/climbing trip to Italy,  this night we drove past Firenze, so we called in and had just enougth time for an evening walk. I alway find watching the sun go down very emotional BUT in this setting the elation went off the scale.

The Ponte Vecchio is normally the prefered subject for photographers, so instead we went for a walk along it.

Hundreds of Smart Phoners were out taking the obvious shots when I spotted a couple of youngsters below us, they had jumped the Balustrade onto a quiet and exposed position on one of the ancient bridge support pillars.

It looked interesting, they would make a superb subject against this backdrop so I followed them, had a word then took a few snaps.

This best shot of this set is a real keeper BUT this one is ok for 'on ere' cos I missed the fingers on the lads hand and as the the light was poor I opened the aperture so the background is a bit fuzzy.

I like the posterized effect of the Edinburgh shot. It gives it the effect of the 1930's BR travel posters and brings out the moody tones of the imminent weather change.

Not that I would like a whole string of pictures done in this way, unlike Bricam, TR's with a whole string of bland landscapes fail to excite me, even if they are in the most exciting of places. A few moments tweaking the levels or adjusting the colour value curves would have put a bit more contrast into these pictures. so what is a photoshopped image? A badly manipulated photo or edited image in the wrong place does stand out.

If Photobucket were not trying to shake me down for £310 I might have posted an evening river scene taken from a little country bridge a few moments after a kingfisher had flown past. I was not quick enough to have caught that picture ( to have taken it I would have had to setup in advance) but as Bricam so rightly says, 'This is a walking forum'.

The image I put on this forum had a kingfisher flying downstream as I saw it but I was able to find a free image of a KF, at the right angle, online  and set into my photo, Photoshopped?? no I use GIMP. Had I put this photo in the best pics of the day without declaring, then I would earn the sort of criticism being levelled at MWM.

If this sort of use of images fits the narrative then it make the experience on this forum more interesting, airbrushing the stretch marks of the belly of some celebrity is more the professional use of photoshop.

Not that I think MWM needs me to jump to his defence, But there are more timid posters here who might be put off from experimenting and showing us the pleasures they get out of walking through their camera lens' by generalizations, which need a little deeper understanding.

Thanks for the support DK, Brian is a serial knocker, I can't do anything right, even when I posted on the MEET UP board that I had a spare place on a Skye trip,  he found something negative to say about it.

hardly a "meet up" when only 1 person can come

BWW

I got a second place in a comp with 1930's style posters earlier this year, I had to produce a PANEL of three photos.

The photos have to be related by theme this can be color, texture, pattern etc so mine  were based on 1930's LNER posters.

Thanks for showing them, a very interesting interpretation. Prior to my retirement I made decor for pubs and hotels, lot repro. stuff over the years but we never really got into the subtle spoof stuff as much I would have like. Put the odd one such as the St.Pauls image in with a set of actual repro's from the time would have been great. I always worked on the idea that decor was part of entertainment.

Guilty as charged.

I have no interest in photography, almost every pic I take is on the forum there are so few of them. I try to use them to illustrate my TRs but if you want stunning photography then there are plenty of books and websites with better pics than anything on here.
I don't even need my own pics to bring back the memories, henryb's photos of his walk in the Langdales bring back memories of 3 very special days for me.

If there are people whose reports you are not keen on then just do as I do and don't look at things that they post, though you will still sometimes end up reading them if other people that you do follow post there.

I like the photos posted on trip reports. When I am walking I like to see places that have been highlighted on TRs mainly so that I can see that I am following the correct route. These TR s are, to me, an invaluable guide to which routes I want to walk and I often end up with a pdf on my phone that contains some photos and some of the written stuff as well which I can glance at if I feel the need for reassurance.

So Yeh keep posting the none posey type photos please. We are not all Anthony Armstrong Jones es.
