TR - Tintern
« on: 09:12:30, 29/07/20 »
I wasn't sure which section I should put this walk in as its start/finish was in Wales but most of the walk was in England.

The walk started by Tintern Abbey or, to be more accurate, at the Anchor Inn as this was a post pub-lunch perambulation.
It was mainly an out and back walk from Tintern to Brockweir and then following the River Wye before making a loop and heading back.

The River Wye and the old railway bridge which we would cross in to England.

Looking back at the Abbey from across the river.

We headed steeply up through the woods which were full of, erm... plants. I'm not prepared to be more specific than that until fernman has spoken.

We were walking across the side of a very steep slope and there had been some major land slides recently.
Looking down at the river far below.

The Moravian Church in Brockweir was built in 1833 when this was a major port on the river being the highest point to which large ships could navigate.
The church was built to counteract the influence of the 7 pubs in the village which it has done successfully as they have all gone while it is still open.

Views up and down the river.

Back to the Abbey

Aw, come on, you must know a hart's-tongue when you see one!
The one one the left is a bit tricky, though, without a closeup of the lower part of the frond. It could be one of three very similar-looking species, so I'll play safe and call it a member of the male-fern group.

After all these years of waiting for someone to post some fern photos....

They can't be 'real' wild campers as they 'LEAVE NO TRACE!'

Thanks DG and Richard.
It is very different from the Peaks or Lakes, which would be my preferred walking locations, but is very nice none the less.

Smoke, a fire, so it must be wild campers  ;)  Or it could be someone having a fire who isn't camping  :o

True but I'm also holidaying with the family, and Mrs R is not the most enthusiastic hill walker, if I get 3 or 4 short to medium walks in that is a win.

Definitely wild campers you know what they are all like, starting fires and leaving rubbish everywhere.

..or it could be wild campers being burnt at the stake by enraged Daily Telegraph reading locals. ;)

Looks a lovely walk. I've only seen Tintern from high up on the other side of the river when walking Offa's Dyke last year.

I really like the Wye Valley, from the little I've seen of it. The stretch I walked from Brockweir to Bigsweir along the river bank was so eerily peaceful, even with the steady downpour pattering on the surface. Marvellous.
