A Cairngorms walk. TR.
« on: 19:18:04, 19/05/19 »
Been a while since I got back from this walk so I thought I'd write it up.

I got the city-link bus up to Aviemore and walked up the Old Loggers way, to Glenmore. I camped above the village in the forest.

next day I climbed up past Coire na Ciste to the summit of Cairngorm before crossing to Ben Macdui and descending Sron Riach and the Luibeg Burn to camp not far from Derry Lodge.

From there I walked round into the Lairig Ghru and camped high on cairn Toul.

After that I went down the River's Eidart and Feshie before getting a lift back to Aviemore.

There's a longer write up with maps and more photo's here

Lovely, Owen.

The shots in the mist are very atmospheric.

Will take a look at your blog.

Enjoyed reading your blog, a fine trip even if you did have to cut it short.

And congratulations on getting the new job  :)

A fine journey through my local hills.  Were there any Gulls at the Stuirteag lochan....I have seen and heard many of them at the lochan but maybe that April is a bit early for their appearance.

A question, Owen - is that Coire Mharconaich in your second last photo above? I think that I descended the slopes on the far left last year, just to the right of the grey craggy area.

Didn't see any, but that doesn't mean there weren't any there.

That photo is looking south west - downstream - with the start of Monadh Mor on the left and the lower slopes of Tom Dubh on the right. The Coire in the background with the line of snow just above the craggy bit is Coire Mharconaich.

A great TR there in wonderful country, especially the high pitch location  O0.
Your story about the clueless frozen pair crossing your path is a scenario I've sometimes thought about but has never happened yet: I'm not sure what I'd do if it looked really serious.

I enjoyed reading your blog Owen, pleased about your new job, shame about your ankle curtailing your trip. Great pics too  O0

Unfortunately it's something I've had happen to me on more than one occasion. I had a chap come up to me on Burbage moor asking if I'd seen a sheep fold? It turned out he was using a guide book sketch map to navigate with. I said "This Darbyshire there are thousands of sheep folds here about's." (Actually I think it's South Yorkshire but you get my drift). I sent him back to Hathersage.

I was with a party of climber one very wet Saturday in Llanberis pass, for something to do we decided to race up the Parson's nose route and back via the north ridge of Crib Goch. This was some years ago when I was a bit fitter and fell running was a thing. Once we'd got up onto the ridge we found a party of about twelve medical students in quite a panic. They thought they were on the Pyg track. Three were hyperthermic, one was nearly unconscious. Fortunately there were enough of us so someone shot off to call out the rescue team, this was pre mobiles. Two people stayed with the casualties and two more shepherded the rest down to Pen Y Pass. The two with the casualties ended up staying with them all night.  :(  It's also happened a couple of other times but then I was going that way anyway so just said "come with me."
