Title: Hello...28 year postman from Warrington...
Post by: 26may1999 on 15:04:01, 14/01/20
So used to walking the streets in all weathers...

Off to Skye with the wife in a few weeks and looking for some gentle walks to start us off.

We are both early fifties...unfit and absolute beginners.

Just bought my first pair of walking boots.

Any advice gratefully received.

Ta.

Welcome from Portsmouth. My advice is because I've made the mistakes already is to not be fooled into buying really expensive gear because of good marketing and flashy photographs. For example, I bought an £80 pair of Montane hiking trousers and I later bought a £7.99 pair of walking trousers from Decathlon, the Decathlon ones are MUCH, MUCH better!!!

My hiking underwear is great, boxer shorts from Decathlon, lovely fit, £3.99 a pair! A great pair of soft warm gloves from Decathlon, £1.49.

I'm not specifically pushing Decathlon, just highlighting that good things can be bought cheaply!

Welcome to the forum from Cumbria :)

gwm's advice about not spending a lot on expensive branded gear is sound.
You need boots that fit, and a decent waterproof jacket (don't skimp on these) - but anything else can be done on a budget.

Skye is lovely.
