Title: Dartmoor Valentine's Day Snow
Post by: archaeoroutes on 18:42:52, 15/02/16

Had a great day up on Dartmoor yesterday. Up onto Hangingstone Hill and around that way.

White-out conditions for much of it about 450m, though in places there was enough grass sticking up to get some contrast.

The views at lower altitudes were superb. Rocky tors poking out of the snow.

If anyone is up that way and bumps into our snowman on Okement Hill, I'm sure my daughters would love to hear about it.

Looks rather cold. Wonder how long your snow man will last

Will be up there Thu/Fri/Sat so hoping the snow hangs on for me  O0

If it does I'll check on the snowman as one of my planned routes goes close to Okement Hill  :)

Good photo archaeoroutes, makes me envious.  Unfortunately owing to a combination of various injuries and a family bereavement I have been unable to get out walking on Dartmoor since the early part of last year.  Hoping to get up there again soon.

Oh well, it couldn't last forever. Was there any snow still around at all?

Nope, all gone I'm afraid.  I'm just back having had three days walking and renewing my acquaintance with Dartmoor.  To say the conditions were 'challenging' is a bit of an understatement, Saturday in particular the wind and rain was strong enough to knock me off balance occasionally and vis was down to about 100 meters making nav a tad tricky at times, but enjoyable never-the-less.  Conditions stopped me taking loads of pics but here are the best two:

Bridge over the River Lydd near Gren Tor

You came home richer than when you left, especially with the pot of gold from the end of the rainbow.
