Title: So what Walking Goodies did you get for Christmas.
Post by: BuzyG on 11:45:13, 25/12/18
Not open my presents yet.  But I am hopeful there may be some hiding under the tree. ;)

Merino socks. Ultralight balaclava and a lightweight fleece. Oh and some heat socks for outside overnighters. 40l and 25l dry bags.

I didn't even hint for any of these this year.
I wonder if the family are wanting me out of the house more often?

I got my present about 10 days ago
I have loads of gear, and don't really need anything else, but Go Outdoors sent me a leaflet about further reductions on their sale items

I got some jackets for my Grandsons, and treated myself to another pair of trail shoes - Merrell MQM for £45

Hiking socks, new fleece, Lonely Planet book about Epic Hikes. Also the OS Quiz book - I'd seen this when I was in Waterstones and thought Someone will probably buy me that for Christmas! Pretty much all my presents, except some aftershave, are walking related. ;D

I also saw the OS quiz book in Waterstones and thought I would get a copy, which I did.
I got a Silva map measuring gadget.
I also got the Andy Beck Wainwrights in Colour book and Lost on the Appalachian Trail by Kyle Rohrig.
My kids got OS maps in their stockings from Rudolph.

A new set of binoculars. The lens had gone in the old ones. Great for looking at the route ahead and for identifying LBJs.

My wife and I do not go in for present buying but when we had the family Christmas meal today, my cracker had a very nice little notebook in it. I always carry one where ever I go so this will be very useful.

My wife has told me that if I can find a suitable hiking blanket in the new year she will buy it for me!

I did get a 'present' though on Christmas Eve, a letter from the NHS saying that I do NOT have bowel cancer! Great timing. I'm of that age now when we are tested routinely.

A rather posh Silva map case.
A friend in Cardiff ive known for many years, sent me it for Christmas, along with a high quality car washing mitt.
The last high quality map case i owned, was some years ago, ive misplaced it, so having a new one is a worthy pressy.
Imagine if i had a pair of socks or wooly scarf.

I know the Silva cases cost good money, so i must be well liked.

Walking related presents were Altberg boot cleaning kit, and a guide book on the Coast to Coast by Trailblazer for planning a future crossing from my wife. an Anemometer from my daughter to give a more accurate weather report on my blogs.
And 12 months subscription to Trail magazine from my son plus this months edition. Very pleased with that  O0

SMC guide to the Southern Highlands from my daughter - I now have the complete set of these excellent guides, and it is timely as we will be staying at Lochgoilhead in March.

She also gave me 'The Last Hillwalker' by John Burns - if this is anything like as good as his 'Bothy Days' book then I am in for a treat! I shall save it for when I am wild camping.

Someone bought me 'The last hillwalker' last birthday, and I chuckled happily through the first couple of chapters before anyone could wrest it off me and remind me of what I was supposed to be doing.  I really enjoyed it, a good one for winter days by the woodburner.

I'm really looking forward to it, but have decided to exercise some self restraint and save it for when I go solo wild camping.

I do recommend 'Bothy Days', a wonderful series of tales, set in magnificent country, funny, often hilarious, in places touching, thought provoking, provocative - a great read, which had me laughing out loud at times. I particularly like the chapter on the futility of Munro Bagging.

Not heard of the OS book until this thread, then my walking buddy gave me a copy this morning as he got two!  Looks good.

A lovely person gave me a Goal Zero Lighthouse Micro Lantern.
No batteries, it is USB chargeable, which takes up to 3.5 hours from mains, PC or solar charger. It is a very bright 150 lumens which can be full on or half on, with both dimmable, and it has a hanging loop.

One gripe: the tech specs state the product is 68g and mine weighs 78 g. That is only half an ounce more in old money, but it is an additional 14.7% if my maths is correct. I'm thinking of having a dig at the  American manufacturer about it.

I'm thinking of getting that after reading your recommendation, but before I order it do you mean "Bothy Tales" by John D. Burns (the author of "The Last Hillwalker"), or the older "Mountain Days and Bothy Nights" by Dave Brown and Ian Mitchell?

Bothy Days, by John Burns, Fernman.

..although I do have the other.

I bought one of these a few months back. It is a great lantern  :)

Well I got some walking socks  :)

I did get money though to buy what I want, I just have to decide what I need the most. New waterproof or new laptop, I can't afford both.

April, I would go with the waterproof, not yet seen a laptop with a hood.

Waterproof any day, unless your laptop is completely broken. Gaynor's awaits.... :)

Bothy Days, by John Burns,
I may get a copy of this, sounds interesting and I have a book token from my birthday which I've not used yet.

My vote is also for a new coat April.

Another vote for jacket April.  If nothing else, having a new waterproof jacket in the bag means its unlikely to rain for months!

Not only did I get the OS quiz book but my son got 2 copies!
Fortunately one was from my sister who, even before he opened it, said she had the receipt if he already had it.

I got the OS quiz book too. :)

Best present-homemade Sloe Gin, not entirely walking related but it'll be nice to take some with me on overnighters.

My 11 year old son got the SMC guide to the Munros from my father in law. Beautiful book, and it is whetting his appetite!

Lots of excuses for me to get into the hills with him next year  :)

I have thought about what to do since Boxing Day  :-\

I ignored you all and bought a new laptop  ;D

My old laptop is so slow and it keeps freezing and then has to be rebooted so I needed the laptop more than the jacket. It will most likely give up the ghost very soon. I have a Berghaus Glissade jacket that I can wear if need be in heavy rain until I do get a new jacket in a few months time, I think it will be the ME Zeno jacket, it is only £130.

Santa bought me a Exped Synmat HL. A little bit more comfort as I could feel myself bottoming out on my thermorest prolite  mat this year while on the Pennine Way. I prefer to think I’m not getting old and it’s lighter to boot.  I hopefully will get the same reliability.

I got money for Christmas so bought myself a alpkit gamma head torch,a craghoppers waterproof coat for the bargain price of £22,it a mens coat but I don't mind as they tend to be longer in length a couple of enamel coated mugs and a flipbelt for the summer months so I've got easy access to my phone and other bits and bobs.I also go running so it will come in useful for that as i hate the armband I currently use to carry my phone.

What is a flip belt?  I have a vision of a my old money belt with the pockets on the inside.
