Title: TR - Dow Crag via the South Rake
Post by: - Dave - on 21:01:38, 08/01/19
It's taken some time but I've finally got round to climbing the south rake on Dow Crag, and what fun it was!

Excellent Dave, fabulous photos & looks a stunner of a day.
Dow is one of my favourite climbing crags - or just a great one to get to the top of by any means. Worth it for the views, as your photos prove.

I once read that in the days of yore (whenever that was) the locals & those in the know, pronounced it's name as if it was Doe (as used for a deer) rather than the current harsher 'OW'.
I like the sound of the older pronunciation but nobody knows what you're on about if you use it. Anyway, that's todays useless fact.

Cheers!

I believe it is 'Doe' - at least that's how I tend to pronounce it. Similar to 'Scawfell' maybe where the original spelling has been lost?

Yup, me too. That's the pronunciation I've frequently heard locally.
An interesting route, Dave - I shall tackle it one of these days.

Great walk, and some lovely photos Dave. O0

The rake looks like an unpleasant way to the summit though, chossy gullies not really my thing.

Great write up , that looks like an interesting route, I've often looked down the various gulleys on Dow Crag, maybe need to have a go at this.
