Carron crag
« on: 18:56:49, 16/10/18 »
My second walk on my latest Lakeland trip saw me visit one of of the lower southern fells, Carron crag. I got the 505 service to Hawkshead where my walk started. The plan was to walk through Grizedale forest to Carron crag before continuing to
Coniston to get the bus back to Ambleside. It was a very windy day and I was glad I took the lower fell option. I couldn't recommend the first half of the walk to Carron crag but really good forest walks are hard to come by in my experience. When the summit of Carron crag was reached, the boredom turned to fascination as views opened up of the southern, central and even northern fells. The second half was better as I descended to Coniston. Total distance was approximately 12km.

Lovely pictures Henry.
I'm not a huge fan of forest walks, much prefer the open hills.

Nice pictures and somewhere I've not been before.
I don;t do many forest walks, but I like to have some in reserve as it were as they can be useful on showery days. The trees can keep some of the wet stuff at bay to a degree.

These boots were made for walking so that's just what I'll do. After I've re-proofed them of course...

Lovely shots henry  O0 Now, you have been where I have not been  O0 I've never ventured to that part of the Lakes as yet.

The pic you wanted us to confirm - I don't know if the fell in the middle of the shot is Blencathra or Lonscale Fell  :-\ I think it is Steel Fell to the left/behind Helm Crag, well spotted they are hard to judge from that angle. I think you are right with Seat Sandal and Dollywaggon.

The winter bus timetable is out now Henry  :)

Very nice TR henry & some beautiful photos/views  O0

We spent quite a lot of time in that area when my kids were younger. We always aimed to let them finish the day off (if we were in Grizedale) at the adventure playground.
And using the bait of finding the sculptures in the forest to get them following the tracks: Andy Goldsworthy did quite a few of them and they were/are worth seeing. Seven Spires/Sidewinder/Shootin Moose - to name but a few !

Even though we got them onto the higher fells in later years, I still like to go back sometimes - it's just so peaceful.

Only a hill but all of life to me, up there between the sunset and the sea.

Lovely pics of an area I am unfamiliar with too.  I think I must be in a minority, I quite like forest walks as long as the views open out occasionally.
