Title: Any recommendations for walks - Exmoor ?
Post by: Innominate Man on 08:23:53, 13/07/16
Morning All,
Can anyone suggest any pleasant walks on/around Exmoor that a visitor with limited time should do please ? i.e. only a couple of days in the area.
I have been a few times before but only ambled around without any real purpose. It would be good to aim for something in particular, especially if it affords pleasant scenery (I know Exmoor in general is very nice scenery,  but you know what I mean).
Anything that avoids Johnny Kingdom really  ;D

I know a few places ;)

Kinda depends what you like and how far you want to walk

- Horner Woods : large ancient oak woodland
- Coleridge Way : He allegedly walked it in a day
- Mineral line : interesting local history
- Dunkery Beacon : county top and open moorland
- Pinkery Ponds up to the Chains : proper scary moorland
- Doone Valley : of Lorna Doone noteriety
- Two moors way
- Tarka trail
- Macmillan Way
- South West Coast Path

Plus you can walk out from Brendon two gates to find a lost village or even from Timerscombe to find the lost village of Clicket

My fave half day stroll is Larkbarrow out to Three combes foot

Many many more obviously, but those spring to mind first !

Part of the pleasure is in the planning so I wont give spoilers

Have fun

Thanks keithie, I'll get the OS sheet and start looking. I know nothing about any of these but plenty here to whet my appetite and will enjoy pouring over the map. Cheers  O0

There are some lovely walks on Exmoor, including many rich in history.

I particularly like the area around Alderman's Barrow, though Valley of the Rocks is pretty spectacular if you can catch it without too many tourists.

Thanks Alasdair, I'm expecting the OS map to arrive today - so will take a look at where these are.
Some good suggestions from yourself & keithie. Thanks guys  O0

I'd second the point about Alderman's barrow ...it's where I typically park before heading off to Larkbarrow etc
