When I had a garden I used to put out Niger seeds to attract Goldfinches, also seemed to attract the odd Greenfinch.

It is good to see goldfinches and other colourful birds. They can be difficult to photograph due to their size and speeed of movement. The one I would really like to capture is a goldcrest, but it is too small, too fast and hides in the branches.

We used to put out niger seed and it attracted many goldfinches (up to 12 at a time) and some siskins. We also had a multitude of birds on the other feeders. The only problem was that this was really only indirect feeding of the local feral cat colony, so we have stopped providing bird food for the moment and are just feeding the cats (hopefully providing some respite for the birds, squirrels, etc.). The rabbit population has definitely reduced and now we hardly see any, when we could see up to 15 at a time in the garden. Perhaps it might be safe to plant something other than grass and bushes now.

I also used to put out Niger seeds to attract Goldfinches but none came for quite a few years but now we get loads although they seem to prefer the sunflower hearts now.  So my suggestion if you want to attract goldfinches don't give up, they will find you eventually!  They are beautiful.
