Title: Your longest day walk?
Post by: pleb on 10:34:19, 14/11/19
Whats the farthest you have walked in a day? Longest I have tracked was meant to be 13 miles according to whoever reckoned it up, on a forum Derbyshire meet years ago.
Pretty sure I walked about 15 miles one time when I went wrong n did a load of road walking back to the car, at Clumber park North Notts.
Maybe I am substandard if Harry Keogh has done 22.7 miles  :o :o :o  think that would kill me!

Longest day is 30 miles, on two occasions.

First was a day walk using the High Peak Trail and Tissington Trail as the basis for a circuit.
Second was the middle day of three days doing the Yorkshire Wolds Way.

Neither of these involved significant ascent though. The longest to have significant ups and downs was 24 miles.
Edit: correct number.

Whereas I once walked 259 miles in 10 days (last half of Camino Frances) they were easy miles and I had walked for 18 days beforehand so had acquired the legs and mindset required.
Looking back I can remember so little of that stretch that I now know that I personally confused the effort  of walking with the joy of being on a walk.
I decided that anything more than 15 miles a day at max was  to risk the reasons I want to walk for. I want to see things, wander off track to investigate things, smell the flowers, throw snowballs at imaginary trolls, listen to the birds. So I gave reverted to being a proud slow walker, and not to emulate a wannabee Marine yomping across the countryside to reach a target by a prescriptive time.

I think it is an age thing. When I was young, myself and a friend used to push each other & cover many miles in a relatively short time. We did 25 miles as a personal best over rough. boggy and ploughed fields near to the village of Wolverley . Blisters galore as badges of honour. Now I agree with you Jimbob. I have slowed down and enjoy the sights and sounds much more. Many of which I was missing years ago. Even though still enjoying those hikes in the past for different reasons. These days I may take a wrong turn now when enjoying the sights and sounds, and not regret it because often I come across unexpected gems in the form of views or other lovely surroundings.
.
I will stop and stand still just to enjoy the moments. There is less testosterone flowing now and without wanting to sound pompous, with age comes a certain wisdom in the form of patience and recognising every moment is unique. So I slowed down and anyway my knees ache sometimes ??? ???

27.5 miles Ivybridge to Okehampton across Dartmoor - the OATS walk (Okehampton Activity Training Scheme, no longer in existence) - in 2000. Ten hours which included several short stops and an hour for lunch at Postbridge!
I was younger then :(

30 miles from the centre of Selby to the Humber Bridge. Last day of a 7 day walk. Wanted to break it into two days, but couldn't find a hotel I could afford, so kept going. Close to collapse when my friend picked me up. Couldn't do it now ten years later.

The longest day when out “hiking” was about 20 miles on the Dufton to Alston leg of the Pennine
Way. Considering there was an awful lot of climbing that day, I managed it pretty well, probably due to the fact we had been walking nearly two weeks by then! On the other hand when I did a charity walk of 25 miles in flat Suffolk, I could hardly walk the next day!

The longest distance i ever managed in a 24hr period, was 83miles, whilst attempting my first of three LDWA Hundreds, back in the 1980s.
There was a position i reached, that no amount of encouragement from fellow competitors, could make my tired limbs and body, continue the last 17 or so miles to the finish line.

Those of us who have been in a physical condition, that ones entire body is so drained and physically incapable of continuing to move ones legs, will know what i mean.

Its been some time since ive walked a real great distance, but i recon somewhere between 25 to 35miles would be my limit nowdays, but if the terrain was really challenging, then who knows.

I am considerably older, and not as mountain fit as when i was in my late twenties early thirties.

Wow, some very impressive numbers on this thread!

I've done a few 20 milers in The Dales and the Moors but nothing more than that i don't think. I am going to walk the Dales Way and the Coast to Coast walk in 2020 so i assume ill have a few long days on those.

Done a few 50 mile days and regularly do 26+ miles.  Walking across Wales in a day (45 miles) was probably a highlight (http://www.acrosswaleswalk.co.uk/ (http://www.acrosswaleswalk.co.uk/)).  Welsh 3000s was one of the tougher walks due to the amount of ascent/descent.  Happen to be doing a 30+ mile walk next weekend (Gatliff "Marathon").

If you're interested in long distance walking, check out the LDWA (https://www.ldwa.org.uk/ (https://www.ldwa.org.uk/)).  As mentioned in a previous post amongst other things they organise a 100 mile challenge annually (not quite sure I'm mad enough to enter that!).

The longest distance was The Lyke Wake Walk, about 41 miles

The longest time was a round of Munros from Shenavall bothy -- Beinn a Chladheimh - Sgurr Ban - Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair - Beinn Tarsuinn - A' Mhaighdean - Rhuadh Stac Mor

We left the bothy about 04-00 in the morning and got back at 02-00 the next day

As you might expect, those were years ago when I was fittetr and younger!

My longest recent one (I did a 52 mile one when I was still at school) was in 2017 when walking part of Lejog from Innerleithen to West Linton at 32 miles and just short of 5,000' in ascent.  I had copied parts of my OS maps but they didn't quite meet but I didn't bother to relook at the originals or recopy them as all looked reasonably OK.  From the copies it did appear that there was a route through a plantation/forest initially along the forestry tracks and then a footpath to reach the other side.   I followed these for 2 hours until I came to a dead end, whilst I tried to find an alternative way eventually I had to return all the way back down before setting off again - seriously annoyed at my mistake and trying not to look like an idiot - not easy!"

The longest for me is 20 miles, twice, both on the SWCP.

The first was around the Taw and Torridge estuaries in North Devon, on completely flat, and very hard unforgiving surfaces. I could only manage about 4 miles the following day, my legs ached badly and my feet where in tatters. The second was St Keverne to Falmouth on the Lizard peninsula. Nowhere near as flat, but managed quite easily.

32.3 miles. When I'm not walking with my wife I walk while she's at work. One day in April this year I set off at about 9.30am intending to do about 20 miles. I felt good so I kept going and arrived home 7h 50m later - I didn't stop and my average speed was 4.1mph.

I agree that it's an age thing... I'm 67 now and there's absolutely no way I could have done that distance and time when I was younger!

The longest single day I have done was London to Brighton, 56 miles snd it took 14 hours. I had previously walked London to Brighton twice many years ago when the route was 52 miles, one took me 12 hours and one 10.5 hours, on both occasions I would jog 5  minutes every hour which increases overall pace.
This year in my 70’s I walked the Liberty Trail from Ham Hill to Lyme Regis , 33 miles and iit took 12 .5 hours due to overgrown footpaths and lack of waymarkers.

The furthest I've walked in a day was 18 miles, when I walked from Hythe to Dover this summer. It included detours enroute and walking around Hythe at the start and Dover at the end.

I've found that the more I walk the further I walk. I suppose one builds up stamina.

The longest walk that I remember most was when I decided to hike my first long-distance footpath. I started from Kirk Yetholme and decided to walk to Byrness as a total novice. It was a blistering hot day and I suffered so badly, both feet blistered, one of my big toes bled and I ran out of water. By the time I reached the hostel, my throat was red raw, it was hard to swallow and I felt wrong from head to toe. It was also my most stupid day as well! The second time T hiked the same route a couple of years later and it was just as bad, but this time I experienced strong winds, directly into my face and horizontal rain most of the way as well.  By the time I arrived at  Byreness I was exhausted, totally soaked to the skin, cold, shivering, weak and depressed. I paid my money over and just went to bed!

It would be over 25 miles in the UK. I have also walked close to 25 miles in the Alps with at 1500m of ascent.  This was all a few years ago. I haven’t done anything much over 5 miles in at least a year due to injury and the resulting lack of fitness.

Same for me.

It was a group walk...about a dozen people took part...organised by a friend to celebrate 40th wedding anniversary. Given degree of organisation (we had a support van to carry food, spare kit, etc that met us every few hours)...it actually “felt” a lot easier that much sorter solo walks I’ve done in Peak District.

I think longest solo walk I’ve done is about 28 miles...and even then I did a fair about of prep for that, by walking route in sections before so I wouldn’t be troubled by navigational [censored]-ups on the day.

My longest day walk was the 40 mile Lyke Wake walk across the North York Moors from Osmotherly to Ravenscar. It is actually a pretty boring walk as one bit of moorland is much like another. I would not especially recommend it, other than being able to say you have done it. It is really quite easy.

My longest single walk actually lasted more than a day.  It started at Boscastle and went SE across Bodmin Moor. including going over Brown Willy, to cross the A30 then roughly E to Dartmoor and Princeton.   Then we went via a series of waypoints across Dartmoor to arrive near Ashburton.  The straight line distance is about 68 miles but the across the ground distance was quite a bit further, probably in the high 70s.  It was supposed to be a multiday walk but we elected to do it in one stint.  If I recall correctly we arrived about half past three the following afternoon.  How much we did in the first day I have no idea but I recall in the early hours of the next morning, after about 17 or 18 hours walking, spending a couple of hours in my bag in a pile of roadside gravel somewhere near Launceston before setting off again.
I was a teenager at the time so it was pre gortex and high tech clothing.  I seem to remember an Aran jumper, corduroy trousers and a grey canvas over the head anorak with a natty yellow lining.

I did 28 miles with the dog walking some of the coastal path on the white cliffs around Dover and Folkestone. That was hard, legs were broken by the end, lots of up and down. I was walking like John Wayne towards the end and my dog was absolutely knackered!

Also did 40 miles of the south downs way in about 24 hours including a bivy out en route. Another john wayne day!

I think my longest was the Yorkshire 3 peaks, which I think is 24 miles. I remember at the top of Ingleborough sitting at the summit cairn and thinking that there was absolutely no way I could do the last 5 miles back to Horton in Ribblesdale.  But as that was where the car was, there wasn't much choice.I was 60 then, and I have done a few 20+ milers since, but not with so much up and down in them.  I am another one who reckons I can walk further now than I could when I was younger, though possibly not so fast.
On the other hand, I prefer thinking in terms of 12-15 miles a day.  I need a reason for long days, accommodation, bus back to the car, finding myself not precisely where I intended to be or something.  I am definitely not enjoying it after about 18 miles, and as far as I am concerned enjoyment is the reason I am out walking.  Though I have noticed, however long or short the day is, when I realise I only have another mile or so to go I feel suddenly very very tired and wonder how I am going to manage the last bit!

The perception of walk length and vigour can also vary according to whether you are a day walker or a backpacker, especially a wild-pitching backpacker walking a multiday trail.
In recent years my long days of 20-odd to 30 miles on undemanding trails were not at all strenuous because I had the freedom to start walking early and pitch the tent late, with no commitments or distractions in between, averaging an enjoyable leisurely pace of around 2 » 2˝mph. In younger fitter days this regime allowed some pretty demanding routes of 20+ miles too, having built up the required stamina beforehand over time.
Typically day walkers have to travel to the start and are often committed to a rough schedule for the finish, naturally limiting the distances.

I'll take it you mean hiking/backpacking rather than running.

34 miles with 44lbs on my back was probably the top for me, fairly undulating terrain as I started the day on top of a munro.

Must say I didn't enjoy it and was gassed by the end.

I stopped smoking at the age of 63 after 20-a-day for about 44 years and I was never more than moderately fit. I began 'serious' walking a few months after giving up and I'm fitter now than I've ever been (or perhaps I've just got more stamina!).

I find oddly that distance walking for me these days seems to be easier than when I was younger. When on a hike I'm less inclined to feel a whinger about myself, maybe it's just an age thing and knowing that time is always slipping past me? I can still walk from dawn to dusk (obviously depending on the terrain) and still enjoy doing so, I did this on a couple of days when hiking the Two Moors Way earlier this year. My recent Rosthwaite to the top of Great Gable and back again was for me a most enjoyable day, was not tired at all by the end of all. I can still get a personal kick out of feeling exhausted, makes a beer, a meal and then a good sleep really worth the effort. Only this time I didn't get good sleep, I was too cold, but still, two out of three was good enough!

I'm not one to do a day's walk to see if a can crack a given distance.
Surely, and this will probably depend on individuals, there comes a point where the effort involved in striving for a distance detrimentally outweighs the enjoyment of a walk.
Just my thoughts. :D

I think I walked a bit over 20 miles on one of my linear day walks, I don't really make of thing of speed, time and distance. I know I felt as if I had walked my limit. That was about when I turned 3 score and ten.

My longest must have been back in my twenties, after a full days rock climbing in Llanberis, I got a lift with friends down to Corwen, I think I hitched a lift into Llangollen, probably walked some of the way. Stopped there for eats and a pint or 2 and set out to hitch to Shrewsbury. 30 miles away. No one would give me a lift, it was Sunday night and I was booked into hospital Monday morning for a hernia repair. As I neared Shrewsbury a late night night driver stopped to give me a lift, it was only 3-4 miles, but he did tell me that a dangerous criminal was on the run and there was a nationwide search for him. I thanked him very much for stopping and he said the criminal was not likely to be walking with a full pack with climbing rope. I wished that there had been a few other drivers that night, who thought like him.
Anyway he was only able to drop me on the outskirts of the town and I had another 11 mile to go beyond. I cut a mile or two off by going across fields and dawn was breaking as I got home.
Had to go without breakfast as I was going to be under the knife later that day, full anaesthetic in those days, I'm not sure that they needed much to knock me out, I think I fell asleep in pre-op before they gave me any.

To date, my longest 2 are these:

The Pendle Way (https://hillexplorer.com/the-pendle-way-24-hours/)
The Derwent Watershed (https://hillexplorer.com/derwent-watershed/)

I'm not so sure I'd manage them now - I've felt a bit of deterioration in the last couple of years... my feet ache quicker now and my knees don't seem to last as long. Earlier this year I failed the Welsh 3000s with the whole of the Snowdon range still to do - whereas 2 years previous I managed the whole thing.

Alternatively it could simply be that I'm not walking quite as frequently and my legs aren't as conditioned as they used to be.

I'll be attempting the Welsh 3000s yet again next year as I refuse to let my last attempt be a failure - and I fancy giving the Derwent Watershed another go as it was probably one of my most memorable walks to date.

I can tell you what's even worse than walking 40 miles in a day...

Driving back home afterwards!

On the old Crosses Walk in North Yorkshire I did 56 miles. I was in marathon training then so I ran the first 33 miles.I would have kept running but feared getting lost therefore I walked with a couple of others for a probably 18 or so miles before running the last bit -mainly to be able to get a shower (which was cold) and to the pub in Goathland. A few years back now. I think did it in about 11 hours. Quick shower and jog to pub.Keen to get back as did not want to walk in the dark when they grouped you up for safety.
I arrived at the pub five minutes before closing time and ordered a pint of bitter and a pint of Guiness. The barman looked over my shoulder and said "Where is your mate." I said "I have'nt got one both drinks are for me." I am now Teetotal.

Not certain what is the furthest I have walked in 24 hours.  I know we did 88 miles in 36 hours on leadership course in the Black mountains. I have a photo in my old album of the skipper awarding us a trophy for that one. I'm guessing 50+ miles.  I was young a fit then though.

I also managed Perth to JoG in one day.  Needed a push bike for that though, so it doesn't count. ;)

Longest was last friday, though unintentional. Caught the train to Ellesmere port, and walked down the Shropshire union canal to chester. Was told it was 8 miles, though it finished up nearer to 11.

45km on the first day of my camino. Felt like I could've gone on. Next day I wasn't to keen!

Did a 24 hours hiking competition where had to complete 45 miles. Managed to do it in 17 hours the 45 miles. On a more sensible multi day walk my upper limit is 20 miles, otherwise it turns into a chore and becomes “boring”

The longest walk Ive done before a proper sleep was 145 miles on the Pennine way in January during permanent sub zero and snow cover conditions. I did have a two hour bivvy at the 50 mile point and arrived at the 145 mile point in Middleton in Teesdale after 82 hours starting in Edale, experiencing much sleep deprivation confusion and halucinations, after the 110 mile point.

Never in my wildest dreams would I think of doing that. I'm impressed though.

How are you with your medical problems, I hope you have made some progress?
