Help with Garmin Oregon 550t.
« on: 08:15:09, 07/05/20 »
Good morning everyone. I am after a little help if possible.
I have one of the above devices which I purchased a number of years back, for Geocaching with the children.
The maps I installed are obviously old now. I would guess at around 8 years or so.
I'm pretty sure the maps were free, but I cannot remember where or how I obtained and installed them.
Will these maps still be appropriate for the UK or will I need to find more up to date maps for the device?

Thank you.

Try Talky Toaster for excellent  free & some paid for, maps. I`m not sure if he does maps specifically for geocaching though.

You need to go on Garmin's website for updates. Just connect your GPS to your computer and download.

Thank you Owen. I have installed Garmin Express and carried out all software updates and it all seemed to go smooth.
I think I am probably good to go, but was just curious as to whether more detailed maps will now be available.

If it came with a topo map (which it probably did) these aren't updateable.  I use freely available and free OSM mapping, there are numerous ones out there and no need to pay for the talkytoaster ones, though he does do a free one without as much detail.

I use

mainly for walking, but they'd be fine for geocaching too.  Others that are good are:

http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
http://www.openfietsmap.nl/downloads/europe

The latter is particularly good as it's updated fairly regularly  O0

Thank you all very much for your help. I went with the free one from Talkytoaster.
Much more detail than the map already on the device. I am definitely good to go now.
