Ok, who likes clouds?
« on: 16:24:31, 06/11/09 »

Clouds are a mixed blessing to us outdoor types, they often herald a drenching and the obliteration of a good view, but where would a good sunset/rise be without them?

A sizable proportion of my mountain yompings have done in low cloud which can be infuriating, but are not the magic moments, long remembered when you emerge grom the mists to reveal a stunning view? A welcome cloud can also provide shade from a blistering sun (apparantly)

A keen eye the sky's ever changing face can provide another enjoyable element to any walk.

Anybody got any good cloud stories or photographs?

PS. From my office window it's wall to wall wet nimbo-stratus, the darkening Pennines draped in low cloud.

I have been lucky to see a couple of cloud inversions which are quite spectacular.

ONly ever had encouter with inversion. It was on a school trip a long time ago. We arrived at the summit of Moel Siabod to find the cloud below us and brilliant sunshine and all the welsh 3000's poking their heads above the cloud.

I LOVE clouds! Especially when I'm on an aeroplane flying to somewhere sunny!  ;) O0

Personally, I prefer the clouds to be high above me at all times. That includes when I'm standing on the top a mountain.... O0

I'd like to see you have a 'best Brocken Spectre' photo competition.

I wouldn't be able to enter, having never seen one, but I have been fascinated by them ever since I was a kid (they featured in both the 'Usbourne Book of Ghosts' and in a slideshow that my dad's friend once did for our family.

I like a good cloud simulacra too, the Fortean Times once featured one that was very definintely a human skull grinning down from the heavens - sinister as you like!
- so any examples of those would be nice to see too.

Not that clear but being on the summit of Snowdon early, having it all to myself, and capturing some (albeit hazy) images of a broken spectre was a privilege......

Been lucky enough to see quite a few inversions over the years. This particular one in the Lakes in 2006 lasted about 5 days....magic.

I love walking in cloud :)

The feeling of solitude you get when the cloud is down all around you is amazing, all your senses seem to become more acute.
It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

I've only had one experience of walking in cloud and it was very special.

Some of my best photos involve cloud. The sky would be much duller without them.
