Thanks Ridge. I was confusing Hayeswater with Haweswater! Sounds a really nice walk Richard.

It was indeed. The weather was lovely, bright and clear, but not too hot.

Wonderful photos, the one of Tess on the cairn could go on a national calendar.  O0

Thanks pleb - Tess is quite good at posing on cairns, but I mustn't let it go to her head! :)

Thank you April  :)

Yes, the best way up High Street - at least the best of the ways that I have tried in ascent and descent. I haven't tried Short Stile or Piot Crag, mind you. Short Stile I shall file under 'Not worth the bother', but Piot Crag goes under 'Intriguing'.

Finally catching up on trip reports properly  :)

Great write up and pics Richard.  Seeing as it hasn't really achieved daylight here today, seeing those fells in the sunshine was very appreciated.  I love the one "Looking back up to Kidsty Howes, dark skies beyond. The dying bracken was a lovely colour" O0

Thanks Mel - glad that I am able to bring a little sunshine into your life. ;)

PS - pouring with rain here in Grange this morning (the house smells of wet dog  :P )  , and 70mph winds forecast on the fell tops!

Great photos, I get the impression that your location move and house move to Grange was a good one.

Thanks GWM. :)
Yes, it has worked out well for us. Close enough to my wife's parent, nice little town, and some great countryside within an hour's drive. Orkney was a great place to bring up a family, but after 18 years, it was definitely time to move on.

Thanks, Watershed  :)
Tess is a great companion on a walk. Had to keep her on the lead for most of this walk though, because of the sheep.

That looks great, an excellent walk. I've seen the red deer in the same place. Its also where I last saw a golden eagle in the lakes, one of the pair which I think are now gone?

Thanks, it was a great day out, windyrigg. :)
Sadly the golden eagles have now gone, but there has been talk of trying to re-introduce them from Scotland.

Another great report there!

I’ve never really been to that part of the Lakes, but it looks interestingly remote. As you implied, it looks like a long drive down narrow roads to get to Mardale Head. I guess you can get onto the main ridge from the other side, from Hartsop.

Yes, the most direct route up from Hartsop is fairly straight forward, but not the most exciting. You can go past Angle Tarn for added interest, or even approach from the south (Kentmere), as I did earlier this year. But parking is limited at Kentmere, so be early!
