Good day on Slieve Bernagh
« on: 20:08:42, 01/01/17 »
Taking advantage of clear weather over the Christmas holidays, I decided to complete a circular walk of Slieve Bernagh. Slieve Bernagh is the 4th highest mountain in the Mournes and would be my favourite in the Donard to Meelmore group. It is one of the few summits which offers great views in all directions. Starting from Meelmore Lodge, recently refurbished, I followed the track to the Mourne wall. Climbing the stile, I made my way towards the Trassey river before picking up a foot trail to the saddle between Meelmore and Bernagh. Turning left I made the steep ascent beside the wall towards the summit. The summit is probably the most recognized peak in the Mournes along with Binnian and Hen mountain, the Bernagh slabs offering distinctive landmarks from distant views. It was very windy at the top and I decided to descend the eastern face of the mountain towards Hare's gap. After descending to the Trassey track I crossed the river before returning to the car park. Total distance was 5 miles.
