Roger and Ann Hiley visited Thirlmere and have the pics and report on their website. Great photos which illustrate perfectly how the zip wires will totally ruin the area.

I'm in two minds. After all, I'm happy to dump my Range Rover Sport all over the countryside when I go walkies. I do my bit to blight the landscape visually, so I'm not sure I've any moral foundation to complain when someone else wants to create an eyesore.

I'm in two minds. After all, I'm happy to dump my Range Rover Sport all over the countryside when I go walkies. I do my bit to blight the landscape visually, so I'm not sure I've any moral foundation to complain when someone else wants to create an eyesore.
I think there is a vast difference between parking a car and going for a walk and erecting 8 zip wires across a lake in the Lake District that will ruin a tranquil valley that still has a wilderness feel about it.

The only difference is that I do one and not the other. I'm happy to visually blight the landscape, as are thousands of other walkers. While I'm not happy about the wires I don't feel I have much of a moral foundations to moan. After all, if I were that worried about the wilderness feel of an area I wouldn't drive a 2 tonne truck to it, creating a visual eyesore and churning out noise and air pollution solely so I can enjoy a hike.
Its like the wind turbines. I can't say I'm especially chuffed about them either, but I'm happy to use the electricity for non essential uses like the TV and internet.
Morally, we wither respect the countryside 100%, or we don't. Too many people want to complain, while remaining blind to the blight they bring to rural areas, no matter how minor and fleeting. Their zip wires aren't any less important than my hike.
I'm not happy, but while I remain a oart of the problem myself, no matter how tuny, I can't bring myself to complain too loudly about such things.

I don't really understand most of your post Lemmy, especially this sentence. Are you saying you drive a 2 tonne truck when you go for a walk? I don't want to be rude but your whole post is slightly nonsensical.
If you cannot understand why people don't want these Zip Wires in a National Park there doesn't seem much point in explaining it to you and I'm not sure why you bothered to post a reply on the thread at all.

The difference between blighting the landscape with your car, is when you've finished your walk, you take your car home with you. The zip wires will be there 24/7. The noise pollution stops when the cars parked, it will continue all day when the zip wires are running.
