Title: Slieve Bernagh to Meelmore hike
Post by: henryb on 20:06:35, 16/04/17
With decent forecast yesterday, I took in two of the higher mountains in the Mournes, Slieve Bernagh and Slieve Meelmore. These are the 4th and 7th highest summits respectively in the Mournes. Starting from Meelmore Lodge I followed the Trassey track to Hare's Gap. Turning right I followed the Mourne wall to the summit of Slieve Bernagh, the first peak of the day. Bernagh is actually a twin-peaked mountain and affords great views of the eastern and western Mournes. It was very windy on the summit. After a few photos I descended to the colony shared with Slieve Meelmore. 20 minutes later I reached the summit of Meelmore. As I saw a rain shower approaching I dropped down to the Happy valley before picking up the Ulster way back to Meelmore Lodge. Total distance was approximately 6 miles taking 3.25 hours.
