related question - can the purple reproofing just be sprayed on instead of being used as a wash in? There is a spray on version but I dont know whether its actually just the same stuff.

See reply #8 by Slogger on page 1 of this thread which explains what they do.

I very much doubt the two products are the same thing.

I'm not sure but I suspect they are the same.  The only reason for the spray on is that you use it only on the outer layer, the wash in gets to the inside layer too which Slogger was saying wasn't a good idea with 3 layer jackets, although I've never had an issue with my 3 layer Berghaus and Berghaus do recommend the wash in.

Is it possible that the wash in is more concentrated than spray on. Wash in becomes diluted with all the water in the washing machine but spray is used as is. Both are supposed to achieve the same objective.

If I'm using a spray I'll use 303 Fabric Guard. Much more like the original DWR coating you get on new jackets. Its solvent based and cures into the fabric so much more resilient.

I contacted Goretex this is their reply. As you will see as regards to restoring the water repellency (DWR) they only refer to the outer fabric, stating that the laminate contains the waterproof membrane and that the outer fabrics water repelency is by way of its DWR treatment.

Note in the second site, it states that to restore water pepellency, you can use either Nikwax Spray On, or Wash In to the garments 'Outer' fabric. This is obviously confusing but looks like they are saying to use the wash in as a direct spray on too!?

The only Nikwax product I use is the boot wax and I find it to be an exelent and  cost effective way of keeping my feet lovely and dry.

Never had a problem as long as the instructions are adhered to. Ifound the main thing is to ensure the washing machine is perfectly cleaned and rinsed before starting
