Locating Napes Needle
« on: 23:57:43, 09/05/18 »
Evening all

Can anyone tell me please how to locate the route up to napes needle for the purpose of threading it,  and from which direction is this recommended starting from Wasdale?

Many many thanks

Lee

There is a path from Styhead Tarn near the stretcher box that leads to the Napes. If I remember correctly some cairns show the way toward Kern Knotts. We had to climb up a gully to get to the base of the Needle after traversing around the fellside. This was when we climbed Needle Ridge with Midweekmountain as guide a few years ago. I've never threaded the Needle so I can't offer any advice on which is the best way to do it.

I've not visited the Napes for a while but getting there is pretty straightforward as far as I recall.

Dave and I walked that way a few years back and his blog entry might help you.

From Wasdale you can either walk up to Styhead as April suggests or you can head for Beck Head. Either way you will find the path to the foot of the Napes - it's marked on the OS 1:25K if memory serves.

There's quite a bit online about actually threading the Needle - have a google.

Good luck
