The Mournes were bathed in sunshine yesterday. I decided to climb the two highest peaks in the range: Slieve Donard and Slieve Commedagh. Starting from Donard park I climbed through the forest to the saddle Donard shares with Commedagh. Turning left I summited Donard two hours after starting. The summit was very popular with other walkers. I didn't want to descend the way I ascended so I decided to include Commedagh. Commedagh is a round, grassy dome with great views of the Annalong valley mountains. I decided to take in Shanslieve on my descent to Donard park. This is my favorite descent in the entire range. Total distance was just over 14.5km.

Lovely photo's, and looks a great walk  O0

I don't know why, having never been to Ireland, but I always assumed The Mournes to be in the north west of Ireland. You live and learn.

Thanks for replies folks:

@ Warbler - the NW of Ireland is Donegal which is essentially split into two areas, north and south. North Donegal includes Errigal, Muckish and Glenveigh national park. South Donegal includes Slieve League, Bluestacks and the Slievetooey range. Its a beautiful area which I intend to revisit in two months.

Fab pics Henry, this is a wonderful place  O0

I am guilty of calling Northern Ireland "Ireland". I do think of it as one island and not 2 separate countries, which I should.
