Title: Comments Welcome
Post by: GrumpyPhart on 13:38:57, 11/01/21
I'd like to invite fellow photographers to inspect this image. It's one I've scanned from a 35mm transparency and have made an effort to eliminate ant blemishes, primarily from the sky area. I'm not too fussed about blemishes elsewhere because, hopefully, they're less obvious.

The largest reproduction I'm likely to make is A4 size so no real need to zoom in too far.
Can anyone see any totally unacceptable blemishes. Thanks

Looks good to me. I would maybe try and lighten the shadows a bit though.

Given that the photo you posted is 822dpi x 822dpi you may find the print starts being grainy much above 4" x 7".
The Amateur photographer forum is a great first stop for expert advice such as you have been asking recently.

Agree with Richard the shadow looks a bit too intense.

Yes, I accept that comment. From what I remember of the location along with the original image, the lighting(snow and clear blue sky at 9000 feet) was quite intense. I have lightened it; maybe needs some more along with softening.

I don't think that it would benefit from softening - just lighten the shadows. Any photo editing software should enable you to do this - even the Windows photo editor does.

You might want to tone down the saturation a bit. The sky seems too blue. That might also help with the shadows.

The sky often is a really intense blue at higher altitudes - that is certainly my experience from my time in the Alps.

Better, grumpy. There is a limit as to what you can do with old photos so I would probably stick with that.

One thing though - there is a bit of a white edge to the upper right slopes of the prominent peak that was not present on your first attempt. Did you mess with the sharpness?

Maybe I am nitpicking - feel free to ignore.

Yes, I'm happy with it generally.

You're quite right. I think it came about when I was adjusting the sky

That second picture is quite acceptable for a scan of an old slide, I think. Never tried this myself though.

That is a big improvement. The shadows have been opened up and the sky, while still deep blue, looks more realistic. As Richard said, there is a bit of the halo on the skyline, but it is not too obvious.

In that case, nothing more needs to be said. Unless you plan on selling it. If it for your own enjoyment/memories then whatever you are happy with is fine.

I agree with previous comments, the second version is definitely an improvement.  Love alpine skies - where was this taken - looks like a refuge with a view?

It's in the French Pyrenees(just) above the Cirque de Gavarnie. The Refuge is the Refuge de Sarradets, just below the Breche de Roland

You made a comment that you were generally happy with the photo, my comment was just as it was. If you are happy with it then why do anything more to it?

You can end up chasing "the perfect photo" and end up not liking what you have done.
