-Dave- and I did the Piers Gill route a couple of years ago. Here is the TR:

It's certainly a good way up to Lingmell Col and is usually pretty deserted.

The route also features in Terry Abraham's documentary Life of a Mountain: Scafell Pike (available on iPlayer) with film of Lake District guide David Powell-Thompson ascending the route. Apparently it is one of his favourite routes.

I saw the Scafell Pike film when it first came out, I'll re-watch it.

As I said, it's on iPlayer. The Piers Gill section starts about 8 minutes in. Enjoy  :)

My last holiday was in the Strands at Nether Wasdale, back at the beginning of last October. I've stayed there a number of times. I can't actually remember having pie (though I must have done, pie being my go-to pub meal). My favourite meal there (sorry for the squeamish) was a stew of Herdwick lambs hearts a few years ago. Anyway, our rooms were in the Strands but the pub wasn't open so everything else took place over the road in the Screes (both owned by the same people). Can't beat a place where they have their own brewery. Mark and Lesley, the owners, are lovely - bonkers but fun. David Powell-Thompson works part-time behind the bar, though he was working in Greece while we were there.

Thanks everyone.
I've re-watched the Scafell Pike programme today and then the Blencathra one as it followed on  :)  and I've read the old thread.
We will definitely go for the Piers Gill path, it looks interesting and hopefully a bit more lonely than some of the paths round there in August.

If you want to escape the crowds in Wasdale and on Scafell Pike, then I recommend the lovely Nether Beck valley that leads up to Scoat Tarn - we were there last August and only met ONE person on our walk up the valley. https://www.walkingforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=40851.0

Strange you should mention that Richard. I am planning to come down to Scoat Tarn from Scoat Fell on another walk when we are there and then head over to Greendale Tarn and back to Nether Wasdale.

I agree Richard, that's a very nice route. A few years ago a group of us descended that way from a day doing Red Pike, Scoat Fell, Steeple, Haycock and Caw.

Dave's photo trip report is here:
