Lets just say it is a nice bit of publicity for the manufacturer.

If it was  to be carried on the Air Ambulance (not sure if it actually could. CAA regulations etc)    the whole helicopter would need reconfiguring. (but why would you if you had the helicopter.)

Would need at dedicated road ambulance to carry it by road. So if it was at the wrong location (station) to the incident it wouldn't save any time.

Wouldn't be able to fly in bad weather/ low light etc.

And of course the big one who would fund it and all the training to go with it.

I was walking in the Langdale area the day they went up the Band and some walkers told me that there was a man going to jet suit up Harrison Stickle - they must have been misinformed. I later spotted the orange flare going off on the Band, exactly as in the video, and the helicopter hovering around, but no jet suit unfortunately - I was too far away.

As to whether this is the future, doubt it. Weather bound to be a big factor.

Throw in they have a very limited duration so having arrived on scene and done the medical bit, the chances are you would end up having to carry it out.  I wonder how much payload it can carry in terms of medical kit and what it weighs?

I saw the first live demo of this contraption last year at Loughborough University. Not too sure how much it weighs but each engine develops around 22kg of thrust. It has five engines, two on each arm and one in the backpack.Overall it develops around 1000bhp,has a maximum speed of 80 kph and an altitude ceiling of 10,000ft.Sorry I can't be more specific but that was the only data we were given.I think the cost was around £400,000 per unit. Its not really very practical having hot engines on the arms and looked more like a protoype than the finished product.

Things like this always look good when the marketing people become involved, I hope it's not like the marketing for waterproof boots that leak!

A jetpack will get you quickly to the individual once you have spent the time driving there, provided of course you know exactly where the casualty is as flight time is very limited and you can get close enough by road.  Then again would could fly there in a helicopter equipped with a decent set of medical supplies and a loiter time to search for and locate the casualty, not to mention the means to lift and carry the casualty straight to the appropriate hospital.  Such a SAR capability was provided by the RAF and the RN before it fell victim to the bean counters and was privatised.

I wonder how useful it will be in low cloud, a howling gale or a whiteout. I saw it on the BBC news where it was said that the device was very safe as the user did not fly high, so wouldn’t be injured in a fall. I suspect that might depend on the slope angle at the time.

That is quite hilarious.  ;D  Fortunately the current model is jet powered, so not filled with volatile hair dressing products. :)

I would be interested to know the range / fuel consumption.
