Changes to EHIC - Health care while abroad

BBC News - Global health insurance card to replace EHIC under new rules

Useful to have. If you do use it abroad you can only use it in the state equivalent of NHS, read the rules carefully., if you do think you want to use one.

Certainly, because the rules state what is covered and it doesn't as an example cover medical repatriation. There are other things as well. However it is damn handy for emergency cover without the worry. My son needed 14 stitches in a bad head gash, the private insurance we had stated that they must be informed of the type and duration of treatment before we could continue with treatment. The E111 as it was then known cut through all the red rape and he was treated on the spot.
