A higher level circuit of the Western Mournes
« on: 21:08:39, 20/09/20 »
This week-end's walk saw me venture to the western Mournes. Bathed in sunshine and blue sky I decided to take in the highest peak in this range, Eagle mountain along with neighboring summits Shanlieve and Slievemoughanmore. Starting from Leitrim Lodge I picked up a good track which eventually petered out to marshy terrain near the Mourne wall. Turning left I climbed Shanlieve, the first peak of the day. It was only a 10 minute walk from here to Eagle, the main highlight of the walk. I counted 30 peaks from the summit in county Down, county Louth and Armagh. This is my favourite peak in this region and is included in my top 5 Mourne summits. Descending to the windy gap I followed the Mourne wall to Slievemoughanmore. This is my favorite aerial valley view in the Mournes with Rocky on one side and Hen on the other side of the valley. I descended through wild grassy terrain back to Leitrim lodge. Total distance was 11km.
