I decided to walk the southern Mournes last Saturday. Driving to Rostrevor I parked at Kilbroney forest car park. The walk was a 'to there and back again' route. Starting on a minor road I ascended to the higher car park near the Cloughmore boulder. Picking up a good track I made my way through the woods as the views to the Gullion range opened up. I gained the summit of Slievemartin 1.5 hours after starting. The best views are southwards across Carlingford Lough to Slieve Foye, the highest point in the smallest county in Ireland. The descent route was simply the ascent route reversed taking an hour. Total distance was just over 10km. Refreshments were available in the car park cafe.
