Gaiters
« on: 22:16:17, 18/07/20 »
I am having trouble trying to buy some gaiters to fit my legs which have 54cm calfs. Does anybody make them?

Hi Edam welcome to the forum.

I must admit it is something I have never worn.
I have seen ankle gaiters worn to keep the dust out of mainly hiking shoes if walking a lot of gritty paths or scree. They should be OK as they don't come over the calf.
We don't have gorse or brambles here in Shetland so I do not need them.
I have thought about it for deep snow but that is so rare now.
I always thought they wouldn't add anything except extra heat, which might not help with feet blisters ultimately.
I do a lot of heather walking and rely on my trousers keeping the damp out of my boots.
I found this site but they are still 4 Cm to narrow

Have you tried to contact Military outlets eg.

I see RAB does stretch gaiters. you would need to contact them and see how suitable they are for you.

they cant be too complicated to widen is this something a seamstress could help with?

I use a pair of Rab Gaiters but I think they only come in one calf size? Gaiters always seem to me to be an item that definitely needs an update in design. I wear mine under my trousers and to ensure they are comfortable against my skin I've had a 1.5" wide soft fabric sewed around them at the top. I find them to be particularly useful when setting off early in the morning when there are lots of dew around and for me personally they are an essential item because I use a rain skirt when it rains. I would still like a better, more user-friendly design though.

Welcome to the forum  :)

Never heard of gaiters being made in different sizes.

The only ones that fit my long wide calf are these.  Just tried to measure my calf, it seems to be about the same length as yours.

They're decent gaiters too. Make sure you get the larger size, as they do come in different sizes.

Edit: When I saw the current price I just ordered a new pair for next winter.  :)

My calfs are 54cm circumference not length. It seems that all gaiters are up to 50cm circumference. I will check with Trespass but I dont expect them to be any different

I have some Military surplus ones that are huge, (sorry I cannot measure them as we are away cruising on the boat for the next 6-8 weeks)

You may find some in surplus shops or ebay. (but they are thick & heavy, 460g compared to my 155g Gelert ones)

Yes I know they are 'camo' but if they fit and do the job, does it really matter ?

Just an example - and a phone call (or ebay message) may answer the calf-size question.

Definitely not cheap but there is a custom option available to take these from 48cm to a 56cm calf (With a bit more searching there may be other companies available with a similar option)

It may also be worth contacting Lancashire Sports Repairs to ask if they can insert a full length panel into existing more reasonably priced gaiters and the price to do it.

Thanks

I have mailed Sof military and I will also visit a Army Surplus store in Crews Hill to see what they have got,

It does look that getting them made to measure is probably the only, but expensive, option so thanks for the links

I've got Trekmates GTX gaiters that come in 3 sizes. I have the largest size but they are on the broad side around my calf muscle. Might be worth a look. Reasonable price as I recall.

I see. A mere 48cm circumference for me, 54cm is a lot more. I will measure one of my gaiters tomorrow.

I have used these for a few years

http://www.spatsleisuregear.com/

They're just ankle/lower calf length but easy velcro side fastening.  I didn't get on with full length gaiters but these still give good protection and after a muddy walk I don't have muddy laces to undo.

I contacted Spats but they are only 44cm

Thanks anyway

Quoting myself. That is a first.

Any way I measured mine and they stretch to a mere 50cm. :(
