Castleton circular including Mam tor
« on: 17:04:04, 04/02/20 »
When I watched Britain's top 100 walks two years ago on TV, there was one walk which caught my eye: Mam Tor. I think it was included in the top ten. Last Saturday I decided to visit the summit as part of a circular walk taking in Cave Dale and Lose Hill. It was a very windy day. I got the 272 bus service to Castleton and picked up the Limestone way initially. After walking through Cave Dale I turned right in the direction of Mam tor. This is a very popular area with lots of other walkers doing the same route as me. Is it normally very popular? I made the straightforward traverse to Lose Hill via Hollins Cross. I think I saw Stannage Edge in the distance - is that possible? I descended to Castleton to get the bus back to Hathersage. Total distance was just over 13km.

Great photos, Henry. I especially like the second one     :)   Cave Dale is one of my favourite places in the Peak District.

Won’t the peak “behind” Mam Tor (assuming you’re walking from Mam Tor to Hollins Cross, so counting that as “forward”) be Lord’s Seat?

Yep ditto, great pics. I was introduced to Mam Tor about 10 years ago by a friend. It is a very popular area, and can get crowded at the weekend and bank holidays, particular in summer. But the crowds often fizzle out after Hollins Cross and Lose Hill.
I usually start at the Mam Nick car park, then do one of 3 variations
A 3 miler over Mam Tor then at Hollins Cross turn right so your almost doubling back on yourself to Blue John Cavern and then head towards Winnets farm and back to the car park.
A 6 miler only this time at Blue John Cavern turn left ish, across the way, and follow the trail passing Treak Cliff and Speedwell Caverns then on to Peak Cavern and in to Castleton and Pervill Castle then make my way back via Cave Dale and the Limestone Way.
A 7 1/2 miler carrying on the ridge over Back Tor to Lose Hill/Ward's Piece then turn right, passed the campsite and drop in to Castleton, head to the castle and pick up the trail back via Cave Dale and the Limestone Way.
Its been a long while since I've been out that way, I use to go there quire often many many years ago. You've sparked my interest in the place again, I'm thinking of going their tomorrow or next week. Mam Tor could be busy with it being Saturday tomorrow. If I remember rightly, Cave Dale can be a bit slippery when raining and the valley floor can turn into a stream.

Leave only footprints, take only memories and photographs.
Life is short, time is fast, no re-play or rewind, enjoy every moment and make it count.
