Thousands set for virtual Great North Run
« on: 08:42:49, 13/09/20 »
From BBC News: Thousands set for virtual Great North Run

My wife is officially taking part as a runner, while I'll be doing the half-marathon as an unofficial walker!  :)

I'm setting off at 9am - that's 30 mins before the proper start - so as to finish at about the same time as her.

Is anyone else here taking part?

That's our second virtual half-marathon completed.  :)

My wife finished in exactly 2 hrs 29 mins and bettered her previous PB over the same route by 8 seconds!

I beat my previous best time for a 13.1 mile walk by 2 mins, finishing in 2hrs 52 mins at an average speed of 4.6mph.

Those are excellent times . O0
And I hope you enjoyed yourselves .
Running is a great sport for fitness and achieving
Good times ,
Bettering yourself each time as a goal .
Participating and enjoying which makes it all great fun as well  ;D
Your walking time is better than some of the Older and late finishers .
So we'll done .

Thank you!

I took up running quite recently and I'm nowhere near being able to run a half-marathon yet. But I'm certain that running has already made a big difference to my walking.  :)

Yes Running will give you strength and Endurance.
And as you are already a long distance walker .
Running won't give you any problem .
Getting up to half marathon distance .
I usually advise 5k for starters depending on fitness and ability .
You should be able to run a good 10k .
Don't be looking for , good times .
It's about getting the Distance .
Then upping to  8 to 10 miles and beyond in your training .
Building up your mileage over the weeks months .
If you want to build up your speed drop back down to 10K , But run It faster.
It's building up the Stamina to do the Half marathons and mind over matter with the Distance .
I don't think it will take you long as you are already fit and we'll .
So go for It .
So when you range up alongside you Oh in the Last mile of 13 race .
Just say .
 " I told you I would do It" :D ;) ;D
Best of luck with your running .

The results have been announced.

It appears there were around 9,500 people taking part in the virtual Great North Run.

My wife was an official runner and came 6,395th - not bad for only her second half-marathon.  O0

I was an unofficial walker and unofficially came 7,883rd - not bad for someone wearing normal walking gear and carrying a backpack.  8)
