Them that know me know that to do a wildcamp has been on my list of things
to do for a long long time.
This is just a very brief TR tonight before I fall asleep...
This is me actually managing to get the bag on my back without falling over!
Me n Lexi were very kindly accompanied by Humper Lumper, Frankie and Donna. :)
On our walk on Friday afternoon up Yewbarrow, we spotted a good place to try out this new venture
near a stream but also in a place where good views could be reached easily.
We decided to try out a spot just below Yewbarrow just near to Dore Head.
Here are the tents, which went up no problem due to the help that Rich and Donna gave me.
I'd got a Banshee and oh what a funny shape it was!
The next bit of this exciting time of trying out new things was to just stand and enjoy the views as the light
faded
(http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad37/twizzphotos/wildcamps/firstwildcamp062.jpg)
and the reality of it being just you, the mountains and the baaing sheep. And on this occasion. The wind.
And some funny shaped rocks...
I lay in my tent and was way too hot in buffalo gear and my minus 10 sleeping bag and began the process
of taking off layers and it wasn't long after 9 30pm that I was soon fast asleep.
The next morning I awoke. ***** I thought. It was light. Well half light. I looked out of the tent door way
and saw this..
Now, I didn't know what time it was and the light was half light and for some reason I was all fingers and thumbs
and I didn't even think of switching on my phone to see what time it was, I just wanted to get out to see
what it all looked like in the morning!
Thinking that that was it, I started to walk and as I walked, I realised that the greyness of the light was
changing to this omg and I realised that what I first saw was towards the west and so it was the moon
and this new view facing east was in fact the sun rising...
I just couldn't believe it!
But, not only that. I had staggered half awake almost to the top of Red Pike.
Me here, alone and with this glory.
Something funny that happened whilst I was taking about 50 photos of the sunrise was in the silence,
this very LOUD BAAA behind me, and I went "OOOHHH!" and turned round and there was this sheep
saying hello!
This is just another one of the shots..
And, this is the very last one. I had decided that I shouldn't be looking at the sun through my camera
lens so I was pointing and clicking without looking, so sorry if any of them seem to be lopsided!
I wandered back to base camp for a bacon buttie and a cuppa. When I switched my mobile on, it said
5.38. So I must have woken some time after 4am!
Thanks Rich and Donna for making this an event in my life time. Your help, especially with the tent
and letting me use your stove too is much appreciated. You have been kindness itself to me and
Lexi. Thank you to you both. I couldn;t have done this without you. O0
Here is one after brekkie up Red Pike again sitting on the chair...
If it is ok with anyone, I'll include some more tomorrow.
I am SO omg! I want to do it as much as possible in all the places I've ever wanted to.
I'm going to call it the dibble way.
Life is so good to have awoken to see a sunset and to have slept on this very land I love and adore.
Thank you to my life events that have led to me being so so lucky to be able to do this.
It feels so very funny to be in a house now. I wish I was back there now.
-

Hey Dibs, it really sounds like you have discovered something inspiring :) ... camping in the mountains is magical isn't it? Well done for going at it and of course a big pat on the back to Humper and Donna for helping out.

Yes! This is what's it's all about. I could feel the sense of epiphany as I read it. It's such a great feeling to still be on the hills when everyone else is going back to their cars eh. And to have it all to yourself, especially with such a great sunrise is something everyone should experience. It sounds corny, but it really does bring out some primal feeling in me that is hard replicate in any other way. Just you and the land, it's a special thing. Thanks for posting O0
-
Brill pics and well done O0
4am! Thats what time me and my mate usualy started walking doing most of the wainwrights. Set off from Barnsley around midnight drove up to the lakes got to our starting point around 3 30am. Had a drink. and started walking as the light broke. :)
Just like you did :) we experienced many spectacular sunrises over the fells :smitten:
Wonderfull O0
-
I'm a bit moved now with all this sharing. Thank you.
It's great to read your sharing...and know how special it is for so many too.
I guess I must have got lucky with both the sleep and the sunrise.
Next step.. to go out from my own house, on an evening, sleep out
somewhere, do a walk early morning and then be back before no one misses me.
That'll be fun.
Joe, I chuckled when I read this.. ;) O0 O0 ....
Mistaking the moon for the sun - class! ;)
Thank you. 8)
-
Well done dibble.. I haven't wild camped myself and would love to do it.. Maybe with some others, cos it would scare me on my own.. :)
-
Catherine i have had the pleasure of your company on many a fine walk and i am convinced you believe you are still 21. You have this enthusiasm not just for your exploits on the fells or life in general but your trip reports may it long continue. ;D Congrats on your 1st wild camp and hear to many more. :) ;) ;) O0
-
i am convinced you believe you are still 21.
John you are so right, lol. O0 Maybe me n lexi see you on Sat at Langdale for the meet up?
-
Well Done and congratulations on your first wild camp.Fun,isn't it.
Next thing you'll be looking at is how far from the beaten path you can get ;) .
-
Yessssss! O0 O0 O0
Great that you could experience all that - it's a lot of effort isn't it, but well worth it. And I think I just thought up a title for your first book -
how about "Western Sunrise" ?!

Thanks Chris. It's really making me smile to think of all the places nearby that I
don't know and can now explore in different times of the day. ;)
-
Well done dibble.. I haven't wild camped myself and would love to do it.. Maybe with some others, cos it would scare me on my own.. :)
Di, pm me if you would ever like some company on a wildcamp. :)
-
Dibble - your lovely & animated description of this special event in your life is catching - I've put that on my list of things to do
Keep posting - you describe with such wonderful enthusiasm. O0
-
Thanks Mad Max Kedge. Let me know if you would ever like to try it. O0

How was the Banshee ? I've just bought one off ebay and waiting for delivery so I can get out on my Second wildcamp in my own tent (http://walkingforum.co.uk/Smileys/alive/cheesy.gif)
Brillo, here it is..
I personally found it difficult to work out what went where, but it did help once I realised that it
has a side opening, because when I put it up in the garden I couldn't even find where the in and out
bit was, and I was crawling underneath to get in and out... so it was quite a relief ( pheww ) to
find out where the opening zipper was, lol! :D
And, this is a proud moment... this is my tent and I slept ok in it!
...my bed... on a blow up mattress which you pump up with your foot on it...
quite easy to do and oh so comfy and then my grandad left me this very warm sleeping bag and
can you see my little red pillow? I hugged that to get to sleep.
And, for me, this is one of the best bits, apart from it all being a best bit, is to lie in bed and see
this sort of view..
The other thing I must add, is, I think that the space is great for one, but a bit squishy for 2,
nice if you are lucky enough to still be in the courting stage, ::) :-*
but it all did very well for me and Lexi. O0 O0
-
Lol at 'in the courting stage' Catherine.....classic O0 O0 :D ;D O0 O0
-
Brilliant TR dibs and what a fantastic experience. O0
-
it takes a lot to do a first wild camp, but the rewards are awesome, well done
-
So glad you made it and it went so well - it's fabulous when you can watch the sun come up over the fells and ..............
...............YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THERE :D :D :D !!!!!
-
Well done Dibble, does this mean that wild camping is going to be a regular pastime now.
How do you feel about just you and lexi or is that a bit too much for now?
-
Lol at 'in the courting stage' Catherine.....classic O0 O0 :D ;D O0 O0
Chuckling with you Yvonne. 8)
Hopefully it might happen sometime.
-
Thanks everyone for your comments. Angry, I will be doing this alone as well as with friends
just like I do the walking...I already have a list of local places I want to try.
Brilliant TR dibs and what a fantastic experience. O0
Thanks Kevin... you wildcamped didn't you? I remember when you did, that I was amazed,
but it wasn't in my thoughts that I could too. Thanks for you putting the seed of the idea
in my mind. O0
-
Really enjoyed reading your report, what an inspiration. There's something magical about being out walking @ dawn although I've only done it on local walks it must be truly amazing to wake up in such a beautiful place O0
-
The other thing I must add, is, I think that the space is great for one, but a bit squishy for 2,
nice if you are lucky enough to still be in the courting stage,
Dibble are you telling us something and are you looking for a larger tent. :D ;D
-
just got round to reading this. Brilliant O0 and something that i would like to do. I have talked about it, as i see it as a natural progression from camping at a farmers field campsite and going for a walk, to camping in a field somewhere while out walking. It's because of folk on here and those that you stumble upon while out, that gives me the ideas to try new stuff. 8)
Nice one Dibs O0
-
Great report and amazing photos! :) :) I do a lot of wild camping but unfortunately, i don't know if its my age or just being used to camping i always sleep well through sunrise!! MMMMMmmmmm maybe an alarm should be added to my kit O0
-
Amazing photo's Dibble. Quite beautiful. I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as you so very obviously did. Awesome. :) :)
-
Brilliant Dibs O0 O0
Looks like you've a whole new lot of adventures to enjoy through wild camping.
You just can't beat a sunrise can you? And to see one from the top of a mountain is even better O0
Good luck with it all and I may even join you if and when I get a chance to come up your way ;)
-
I d heard all about it but the pics have me spellbound Catherine!!!!! O0 O0 O0 O0 Roll on the next one and the next one eh!!!!!! O0 O0 O0

Thanks Gylders. Just let me know if you ever can.. I have a few excellent spots in mind. O0

Thanks Dittzzy, foz_79, redeye and yamyam for your lovely comments.
I've just come back from a very wet few days in Langdale. It was great to
camp on an organised camp site and I will use them again, but for me it is
going to be very convenient to wild camp over night just locally from where
I live.
There are just some days when I can't get out... but this way, I could cut my
grass etc and then at 7pm at night, I could go up the valley, park somewhere
and then wild camp over night and come back home the next day when I am
ready.
I think it is brilliant way of using my time of living where I do more wisely.
I don't talk about this a lot, but I sometimes have commitments due to my
mum being very disabled, which can limit the time I spend out.
I can't say how many times I have sat at home in the evening, wishing I could
have gone out..well now I can use the 24 hours that there are in a day!
Thanks everyone for the inspiration of what you do on here.
And, I love my little stove. O0
-
And, I've eaten way too much over the last few days. I don't know where my
appetite has come from!
Dinner on the little stove in the little pan, has tended to be...
First add a dot of butter in the pan,
add chopped spam / corned beef or could be tuna
chopped up mushrooms
then chopped up spring onions
chopped up carrots,
when it is all hotted and a little browned
then add water and boil for a while
then stick a small can of baked beans in
and finish with some more water and Smash
and stir
add milk if required
and eat.
-
I used to love Smash I didnt know they still made it O0

Lol at 'in the courting stage' Catherine.....classic O0 O0 :D ;D O0 O0
Ditto ;D You are unique Dibbs. You're enthusiasm and wonder at the simple things in life is refreshing and inspiring. I don't think you realise what a great influence and contributor you are on here O0
Anyway, why would there be more room if you're "courting" ::) :-* ;D ;D

is the desert... :-* O0

Glad you had such a good time Catherine,
If you manage to get up to Scotland I am sure we could find somewhere to wild camp where the deer wake you up in the morning!
Might have to bring my tent down in September at this rate! I'm sure my down sleeping bag and the dog will keep me warm and it will be worth it for the sunset and sunrise! O0

Sounds great ptarmigan. I do have plans for travelling up to Scotland and wildcamping where ever...
so.. deer sounds very wow!
And you are very welcome to come here and share wild camping... just let me know :)
-
Catherine, I’m too old and broken myself to do any wild camping nowadays but it makes my heart sing to read that you are having such a good time, thanks for writing it all up & long may you continue doing what you want. O0 O0

Yeah right Mick, I can see you in 12 months looking back at that comment and saying, "What a load of young Bovines that was" O0 ;D

Never say never Mick, ask Ian S about the man he helped complete a full traverse of the Cuillin ridge wearing a calliper on one leg and minimal strength in the other. Took 4 days and an awe inspiring effort!
You can do it O0
-

Sorry Pete, gave all my kit away years ago, the most outdoor thingy I do now is sleep in the awning, when we are away in the caravan must admit I do like laying there hearing the rain fall. (Need my comfort nowadays)

Well you'll just have to borrow ours then O0 That's my favourite thing as well, lying cosy in your Maggot (Sleeping Bag for non-Military types) and listening to the rain on a hopefully rainproof tent. Only problem is when it continues after you have to get up :( ;D ;D
-
This is truly inspiring stuff, and I would love to do it some day, although I wouldn't know where to begin, being a city-dweller!
-
Just caught up with this (I'm not as quick as I used to be...) - wot fun, though. I'm glad you had a positive experience and that no hill-monsters were lurking about outside your tent during the night. You're lucky to have such a wealth of nice places to go so close by.
I'm not jealous at all. Oh no....... O0
-
Wild Camping murrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :) Been wild camping in the lakes this weekend!!! WET is an understatement...... Muct have slept in 3inches of puddle lol
Wouldnt change it for the world ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yup, definitely the right way to look at it. Always an experience and always an adventure to be remembered O0

It would be great. O0

Ooooh... and it was wet enough just in the valley! I bought a gazebo to cook under!
All power to you foz_79!
-
Cheers Dibble :) Was a bit disastrous, ended up kipping in some bogland on top of great dodd! was running out of light to get down. All good fun though

Thanks Mike.... I had always thought that I would be scared in the dark by the hill monsters.
but I wasn't. I learnt that the hills are just the same in the dark as they are in the light.
And, the truth is, that wild camping extends your time on the hills
to experience time there that we often don't.
And, yes, I do know that I am lucky to live where I do, as I do now have a list of places
that I'm going to try as soon as I can.

Do you have photos of the rain tumbling down? I forgot when I was camping at Langdale,
it as just quite enough to be there in all that water! ;)
-
Not really, getting dry was top of my priorities! got a good photo of striding edge on route though! as below :)

beauty pic!1 Im up there very soon! O0

This is truly inspiring stuff, and I would love to do it some day, although I wouldn't know where to begin, being a city-dweller!
I never thought that I would be strong enough to carry even some basic gear, as I'm only just over 7 stone
but to my surprise I managed it.
If you want to know anything, just ask... I did! Everyone is very helpful. O0

Thanks so much for sharing. O0 O0 O0

Glad you like it :) :) :)

I agree regadring the better use of time with wild camping Dibble.
Once i get my tent I plan a few quick jaunts in and around Ennerdale, Wasdale and Butteremere. I often can't get out due to family commitments, so a quick wild camp would be ideal.
