Title: TR Calfield Rig and Mid Hill from Langholm Sun 23 Aug 20
Post by: April on 08:19:14, 26/08/20
No photos from Saturday, I didn't take any on our two walks, one in Gelt Woods and the other along the Tyne at Newburn.

Sunday we headed north to Langholm on a walk found on the walk highlands website - www.walkhighlands.co.uk/galloway/mid-hill.shtml

It measured 7.65 miles and 392m of ascent when we walked it and recorded it on viewranger.

We parked in the big car park and the weather didn't seem too bad when we set off. The forecast had said cloudy with sunny spells with rain later. It was cloudy, we got no sun and it rained sooner rather than later!

A bit of road walking

It was a quiet road passing a few houses, then we accessed a track through a gate that would lead us to the foot of the climb up Calfield Rig

It had been raining on and off and it got more steady when we reached the foot of Caldfield Rig so it was on with full waterproofs. The way up was through long rough grass so we would have put the waterproof trousers on anyway.

We could see weather fronts to the south and we thought it was coming our way. The ground was less rough underfoot now but still wet and boggy.

Those things on the hill ahead are wind turbines capped by clag. The hill is called Clagberry Hill  ;D

We stopped for some lunch and a brew before we got to Craighope Head but we deployed the storm shelter to get out of the rain for a while.

On the way to Black Knowe

We saw a runner going up to Naze Hill then back again towards us and we said hello to him near the stile at the fence. We all agreed it was a lovely day.....not

We would be over there after Black Nowe. We summited Black Knowe in mist so I didn't bother to take a photo then we retraced our steps back to the fence and made our way up Mid Hill. It was very wet underfoot here.

It is a pretty pigeon if it is.

We dropped down ward and over to Meikleholm Hill

The cloud lifted for a while and we had views. There had been the odd peep of views all the way around and we felt robbed because this would have been a very nice walk with good views if the weather had been better.

These flowers were lovely and we think they'd been planted by the householder here and not really "wild" but very nice all the same. A bit of a soggy walk but better to be out than not.

Looks better for this weekend, fancy another trip over the border beefy?

Nice photos despite the less than perfect weather, April - good to get out.

We did actually consider moving to the Langholm area instead of South Cumbria, it is a nice town, but my wife wanted to be closer to her parents.

It is in the rucksack. Marmite on toast for breakfast?  ;D

It is a nice place, I wouldn't mind living there myself  :)

No, it didn't. You would have loved it, lots of mud  :D

It does, we did miss out on some fine views of the hills surrounding Langholm  :)

You plan to go up Clagberry Hill,  what do you expect.
It is probably sensible not to venture out of doors until we get to Kirk Yetholm,

Thanks pdstsp, the weather looks better. Dicsovered yesterday my rucksack frame has broken so beefy is going to try codge it together later. It will have to do though, the replacement won't come until next week.

Broken because of the weight of wine carried?

Beefy carries the wine  >:D   ;D

The rucksack couldn't be fixed so I will have to put up with a bit of a lean on the pack  :(

A nice looking little mooch that looks April.  Pity about the weather though.

Please do revisit in better weather as the Langholm area has been recommended to me for when I'm "county bagging" D&G so I'd like to see a better "advert" if that's alright  :D

The flowers are a nice splash of colour  :)
