Ear covering for warmer months
« on: 11:12:56, 08/05/20 »
I own a Lowe Alpine ear covering a hat, with peak for the colder months (really good!) and I've got a hat to protect my head and ears when it's sunny and hot but what I don't have is something small, lightweight and easily storable to cover my ears when I'm high in the mountains when the sun is shining but the wind is cold. I find that if I'm on a long hike in the summer months my ears can get quite painful if faced with day to day wind exposure, especially in the mornings when it tends to be chilly anyway.

I don't want another hat, I've thought of a Buff and I've thought of buying a lightweight thin but effective ear covering headband, which if necessary I could wear under my sun hat. I think, that given a choice, I would prefer a headband, so can anyone recommend one, please? I also think it could or might be a useful item to use when I'm sleeping in my bivi.

My wife has turned one of my thin buffs into a hat for me. It is like a tight fitting beanie. It is long enough and stretchy enough to cover my ears and is great under a hood. It is also thin enough to wear under a sun hat should I ever need that.
It's all uphill from here.

I only wore them once when I was out skiing.  A very fast schuss into a dark cold hole at 9,000 ft and I felt my ears freezing from wind chill.  I remembered I had my daughter's ear muffs in my pocket so I slipped them on without loss of speed.  The guide wet himself laughing when I slid to a stop alongside him but they worked!
