TR Grasmere and Easedale Sun 25 Oct 20
« on: 18:23:29, 27/10/20 »
We drove to Grasmere on Sunday and parked in the layby on the A591 near the Travellers Rest. The forecast was for light rain showers and sunny spells and it was dry as we walked toward Grasmere.

Stone Arthur from the A591

The plan was to walk along the Coffin Route to Rydal then around Rydal Water back to Grasmere. It started raining as we walked through Grasmere Village and then the light rain turned to torrential rain and we were soaked by the time we got to the A591 near Dove Cottage. We thought, sod this, let's get back to the car. Once we reached the Easedale Road the rain had stopped so we decided to walk up through Easedale.

Seat Sandal from Easedale Road

A bit of sunlight above Easedale

Helm Crag

A woman who'd got out of a car to take photographs near here told us "to go over the foot bridge to the left because it was all washed away" or something. We didn't want to go that way so we ignored her unwanted directions.

Autumn colours in Easedale

There was a lot of surface water on the path and the becks were rushing with water. We would love to say we had a dry walk after the initial downpour but it started hammering down again as we approached Stythwaite Steps. We got the storm shelter out and had some lunch under it. We retraced our steps back to Grasmere and we did get a bit of sunshine.

Flooded path and dying bracken

Water gushing through the wall

There were a lot of Herdwicks about

It was nice to see them, I've missed them since we have been going to Scotland.

Sourmilk Gill

There was a lot of water in the waterfall.

Approaching Lancrigg

A look back before we reached Easedale Road

We'd enjoyed the part of the walk where we weren't being soaked  :D Our walk was A591 layby - Grasmere Village - A591 - Grasmere Village - Easedale - near Stythwaite Steps - Easedale Road - A591 layby 5 miles and 146m ascent.

Gosh there's some water in Sourmilk Gill.  And there'll be a lot more after the next few days by the looks of it  :(

I'm missing the herdies, though I came across a flock at a local nature rserve on the Sefton Coast path last week, which was nice.  They didn't half look out of place on the sand dunes.

Certainly caught some lovely views in between the rain showers.

Did you catch the film about herdwicks in the Rheged Centre a few years ago?
It was brilliant when they crossed over the bridge from the farm, they noticed the camera... ooo what's that, haven't seen that before?.... so they stuck their noses in it to investigate!

I can see why it's called sour milk gill, does look like milk churning on this screen.
I had forgotten just how much it rains up there, lol at the flooded path.
There is some good news.... Did he mention I got a free osprey rucksack? 😄

It looks really bad  :(

:)  I've never seen herdies on sand before  :)

;D  Hysteria it was. It was nice to get out of that rain for a while.

Lovely autumnal colours April

Thanks henry

The colours were lovely; better in real life than what me camera can pick up

I saw something on tv a few months ago, a film watching herdwicks as they were being brought down off the fells into Eskdale. Not sure if that was the same one  :)

He didn't  :o  How did you get a free rucksack? Jammy sod.

To be fair I think the rucksack is slightly used, but only just. I was moaning on another outdoor forum about my rucksack zip going, a moderator on there who sounds to be too old and stiff to do any good walks said I may as well have it, so I messaged him my address and he posted it to me. From the Isle of Wight.

Hi Beefy and April

It's nice to see you guys still hitting the hills come what may weather wise.  O0
I must be getting old and boring as i tend to check the weather forcast these days. We've had some good old soakings in the past and all are part of our precious memories. Those storm shelters can prove pretty useful in the wind and rain. It looks wet.  Waterfall in full flow - I can almost hear the noise now. How long was the walk - how long was you out there.  :)

Lovely autumn colours April. And I really like that shot of Seat Sandal, a hill that I have yet to climb.

It isn't the most exciting hill but it is often the quietest summit in the area.
