TR Chilterns Walk
« on: 20:18:30, 07/04/21 »
This was my first walk that I drove to in a long time and it was lovely to be somewhere other than close to home.

I had done almost all of this walk before but I wanted to remind myself of it just in case I get any takers for my proposed meet next week and have to look like I know where I'm going.

It was a very chilly start and I was soon wearing all the clothes I had with me.
The frost almost looked like blossom.

The woods were still feeling quite winterey.

Looking back along the Ridgeway

I had wondered if the wild garlic would be starting to flower after we had such warm weather recently. It was in full leaf but no flowers yet, but there were some signs of spring.

I was enjoying the walk but my ankle started to ache in a strange and unusual way.
I walked past a pub where they were busy tidying and sorting things out inside.

Sunken lane

Slightly worried about my ankle but, apart from that, a lovely 15.5 miles.

What a magnificent tree in the second photo.  And I so much agree how lovely it is now to be able to go further afield    :)

Hope your ankle is OK

Yes, that tree is a beauty. And I am intrigued by the sunken lane - was it a tramway for a quarry or something similar?

PS - hope that your ankle mends before your meet. :)

Thanks

The story is that the lane was dug so that the landowner could ride along the top of the hill and across the bridge while the plebs were underneath.
I think my ankle is OK it just kept having a strange twinge.

Nice pics Ridge - I completely agree, just walking somewhere different is a wonderful feeling after being restricted for so long.  Hope you get some takers for your meet.

Nice walk and photos  O0

Yesterday that northerly wind was a biter early on. I agree about the tree and sunken lane, quite striking.

Thanks G&P and Mel.

The ankle is OK now, it felt as if my boot was pressing on a nerve or something. I've never had this problem before.
I'll put a pair of trainers in my rucksack next time I'm out in case this becomes a recurring problem.

Where was the sunken way, I'd be intrigued in going to look at that too!

The sunken lane is the ROW which runs SW from Nettledon in Hertfordshire.

Ah brilliant, that's right around the corner from me.  I'll have to go and check it out this weekend!
