Title: Base layer thermals help please
Post by: Jako999 on 21:38:50, 02/01/21
Hi all and Happy New Year all.
I want a pair of base layer/thermal leggings but I want them for dual usage. I want to be able to use them on my motorbike the problem there is that I wear high boots and if you have too many seams the boots make them dig in to your legs, I suppose I could buy a new pair for the bike and a second pair for walking but can anyone recommend a good pair that may cover both uses?
A fly would also be very handy.
Thanks

Ex-Army from a surplus shop. The British Army do 'modern' synthetic stuff which is fine; I also use mine on the motorbike as well as pushbike and walking. They only come in Khaki (no trapdoor in the a**e  O0 ).

I have two pairs of leggings and I would recommend both.

I bought Icebreaker 175 Everyday Thermal Leggings to wear under thin walking trousers on very cold days. They are extremely comfortable and I also wear them for running on cold days (with shorts of course!).

I've also got a pair of Salomon running tights, which I think are the Agile model. These aren't quite as warm, but dry very quickly and have extras such as ankle zips and a small zipped pocket.

Look up Odlo, they do some very good one but pricy, Brynge is another make.

I always wear merino wool base layers because they keep me warm when wet. I'm very impressed with the value of EDZ Layering products. Very high merino wool content. I've reviewed their merino leggings and top here;  https://wildwalkinguk.com/2020/03/08/edz-merino-wool-base-layers/

Because of the way that I camp I utilise my base layers, leggings, etc as night attire. My clean clothes change over point is when I erect my tent for the evening. I change to clean clothes, wear them overnight and continue to wear them the following day. I wash what I've worn and they then dry on the back of my rucksack. Usually works well as a routine, only rain can disrupt my daily pattern.

Merino wool is difficult for me, it makes me itch, but I have discovered that if I wear my Bryynge 'string vest' next to my skin I can then wear the merino items that I have. I hate owning stuff that I can't use.

Nowadays I wear a pair of elasticated synthetic leggings at night, bought on the internet for a fiver. They are just thin material elasticated tubes, the top clings to the top of my upper thighs (like old fashioned ladies stocking used to) and the bottom just secures around my ankles. I tend to prefer to have uncovered feet because they are always warm in the foot box of my sleeping quilt. I also wear the tubes in the summer because once on, (I sleep on my side) if it's hot and sticky it makes my legs feel more comfortable, sometimes skin to skin can feel clammy.

I've use a number of Icebreaker, Inov-8, and EDZ merino wool base layers. I've found them all a bit itchy on first wearing but once they've been washed a couple of times, I've not had any more issues.

My base layer is merino which i purchased from IsoBaa. It's not the cheapest to be honest but it is very good gear.
Never made me itch yet and i wear them most evenings and weekends

GoOutdoors merino base layers are well priced. I've got three which I wear most of the time (not just when walking) and have lasted better than Icebreaker ones.

Merino wool always itches on me, and any deodorant with aluminium in it, it can drive me to distraction and one small puff on my skin can cause me to itch for up to two weeks later.

Great stuff, it isn't 100%wool but it is so strong and niff free. It has no shoulder scruffs and unlike my more expensive icebreaker the moths haven't had a field day. (Actually I suspect the backpack and straps, little bits of nylon thread ends  might be the cause.)

Edited to add. Just looked on the Aldi website and they claim it as 100% merino. So they must have changed the mix since I bought mine 4 years ago.

I found the Aldi ones a bit itchy and tend to stick with icebreaker, but only buy in the sales. Not merino, but I am becoming a fan of marks and Spencer thermal undies - er, I mean base layers, not sure if you are meant to admit that on this kind of forum

Mine are 100% merino but since I purchased mine I did see some that were not 100% merino. Looks like the spec changes from time to time.

Another vote for Aldi's merino wool base layers, decent quality, cheap as chips, and no itching for me at all.
