Budget tents
« on: 00:57:44, 23/06/20 »
Hi all, looking at trying a wild camp, plenty of discrete areas about a mile from where I live (forestry, moorland etc SW Scotland) been looking at OEX Rakoon 2 £89, Eurohike Ribble 200 £50 Eurohike shadow 250 £50, forclaz trek 100 £65. I know there not the all singing and dancing whistle bells etc but just looking for a cheap starter to see if it's for me. Any advice greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum  :)

I don't know the tents that you refer to, but I would avoid fibreglass poles if at all possible, as they have a habit of splitting and are difficult to thread through the sleeves (the metal collars snag). I appreciate that this might be difficult on your budget. As for tent type - fly first tunnel is very simple, and choose an inconspicuous colour, obviously (but not camo).

I'll have a bit more of a delve online. Good luck.

After thinking a bit I have remembered the Robens Arrowhead - I've considered this myself for wild camping. Small but bombproof - take a look at the wind speed test results on the Robens website - https://www.robens.de/en-gb/shop/outdoor-tents/arrow-head

I've seen it for eighty quid on Amazon

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Robens-130213-Arrow-Head-1-person-tent/dp/B07N3ZCJBD/ref=asc_df_B07N3ZCJBD/?tag=bingshoppinga-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=&hvpos=&hvnetw=o&hvrand=&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584070141863540&psc=1

Edit - this is a small one man tent though, so do check that you would be happy with the size.

I have good experiences with a Vango Banshee 200, which I had picked up for £89. I have wild camped with it in Scotland, Ethiopia and Costa Rica and it held up well in very wet and windy weather. Functionally it is just as good as some much more expensive tents, it's just heavier.

Unfortunately, I cannot find it any cheaper now than £121 (summertime is not the best time to look for good tent deals).

I've looked at the Arrowhead, it was displayed last year at a garden centre in Chichester. I thought it looked a good tent, the only reason I didn't buy it was because for me it lacked headroom, my Marmot allows me to sit upright. At that time is was £70.
