Walks over for 2020...
« on: 21:39:38, 30/12/20 »
With everything that has occurred this year, only managed to achieve the following on 'Ways', by day walks...

Pennine Way  ...  24.89 miles
Hadrians Way ..   32 miles
Teesdale Way ..   10.98 miles
Tyne Way .......    16.42 miles

Local walks .....   462.78 miles (not bad considering injuries!)

I've only done local walks so nothing hilly or even remotely all that interesting but i do like my local park a lot and grateful to have it.
august, september, october and november each had about 55 miles completed each. december accounts for 11miles. so ~230 miles total for me in 2020.

december though has been painful and barely been able to get out at all, the cold is not good for my asthma and made it kind of impossible for me.

happy new year and good wishes for the coming year :D

Guess you're thinking positively, nights are getting lighter, warmer weather on it's way and maybe other good news on the way as well!

Happy New Year fatmanwalking, hope things improve for you soon.

Round Anglesey.
Aberdeen to Lossiemouth on the coast.
Lot of criss-crossing Norfolk
St Swithun's Way
Wey South path
And a week on La Palma before the madness began

A different year for us all I expect.

The negatives first.

No Winter trip to Scotland to complete the 4000s.
No Dartmoor High Ground Marathon.
Only 2 short sections of the SW coast path walked before the pandemic hit. Have avoided the coast path since. Too busy.
No Indoor climbing.  The Walls are open, but again, too much risk there IMHO.

And swiftly on to the Positives.

Over all my walking has not reduced at all this year. Just over 95 miles and 16,500 ft of ascent per month on average.  There has just been far more urban and local routes.  Many that I would never other wise have enjoyed. Such as walking from home to Cothele and back one evening, when there was no traffic on the A388 in lockdown. An unthinkable walk any other time.

Winter has arrived on Dartmoor the past week and I am loving it.  More tomorrow.

I still managed a couple of unsupported Marathon jogs on the moors over the summer.  Doubt I would have ever done Minions to Brown Willly and back had not been in shape for the cancelled marathon.

Alas Nothing has replaced the SWCP, We are missing those walks, but it's not forever.

And finally though not strictly walking. I am back leading simple outdoor trad climbing again after 40 years away. O0

Every year I set myself 3 targets,  1000 miles walking, 1000 miles cycling and 30,000 metres of ascent. I hardly ever manage all three, and don't get particularly worked up about it, particularly the cycling as I only get on a bike when the weather is good. To my surprise I managed all three this year, but am really looking forward to going up a more exciting hill than the one behind the house. At 85 m it has a brilliant view to effort ratio, but I have an intimate knowledge of every puddle on it!

Well, that's it for another year.  :)

As 2020 began, I decided my target for the year would be to walk 3,000 miles and all was going nicely to plan... until lockdown.

So that we could continue to do a significant amount of exercise daily, we bought a treadmill. That, combined with me taking a real cut in grandfather duties, meant that I clocked up far more miles than I would otherwise have done - after all, there wasn't much else to do! The treadmill was such a success that we decided to spend what we'd saved on our cancelled Christmas holiday on a better treadmill ( / incline trainer).

The mileage for 2020 was:

Normal outdoor distance recorded by GPS: 2,486 miles
Distance recorded for treadmill activities: 1,630 miles

Total recorded distance in 2020: 4,116 miles.

Here's how the monthly mileage was split:

I enjoyed doing hill and mountain walks on the first treadmill, although the maximum ascent was only 12% so they were quite easy. Things changed a lot with the inline trainer because that goes up to 40%, which is very challenging and much more realistic.

My total ascent for 2020 was:

Normal outdoor ascent recorded by GPS: 133,395 ft.
Ascent recorded during treadmill activities: 154,888 ft.

Total recorded ascent in 2020: 288,283 ft.

Impressive Mileage Dave!

All my walking done in Shetland this year.
Slightly too much on the roads, but same problems as everyone with Covid.
Lost about a month due to a couple of injuries, but all is well now.

Year-end total of 1686 miles.
Total ascent of 214393 Feet (65347 Metres) Bit lower than expected, due to all the local road walking.

Praying for less restrictions in 2021 and more hills.

I hope you all have a safe, happy and injury free new year. :)

Thank you.  :)

I don't distinguish between walking and running, and I didn't do any running at all until the end of June. At least 95% of the distance is 'normal' walking and the runs almost always involve walking for some or much of the time!

I know how so many have suffered and I really feel for them. It makes me very appreciative of what I have managed to do this year.
200m Round Norfolk walk
1100m Dover to Cape Wrath walk, wildcamping all the way
70m Skye trail
50m? Lake District (Half Bob Graham Round) 5-days walking in snow
I've also worked more hours this year than last year. (Care home)
I've tried to stay positive and I'm feeling very very lucky
Best of luck everybody
