Crianlarich / Loch Lomond national park
« on: 09:56:16, 26/06/20 »
Hi

It was too complicated to book to whole West Highland Way for this year, so I booked a week in Crianlarich, in the Loch Lomond National Park, if anyone has any recommendations of walks there? I am already aware of Ben More, and maybe walking along the West Highland Way for a day. Or taking a train to Fort William.

I could also try wild camping for the first time. Picking the best day weatherwise.

I'm hoping the trains will be fine to get there.

Train to Tarbert for the Arrochar Alps
Train to Tarbert then walk north over Ben Vorlich (steep) to Ardlui for a return train.
Or do Little Hills and Ben Vorlich from Ardlui
Train to Tyndrum for a big day on Ben Oss and Ben Lui. You could perhaps find a route over the hills back to Crianlarich.
Train to Bridge of Orchy for a steep climb up Ben Dorain
Train to Falls of Cruachan for a walk up Ben Cruachan, return along the ridge to Bonawe station
Train to Taynuilt then NE along the shore of Loch Etive, up and over Glen/Lairig Noe and down to Dalmally station - this looks like a really good low level walk

Plenty of other interesting looking hills immediately south of Crianlarich, but it would appear that access to the hills immediately to the north is hampered by the lack of a bridge.

PS - I'm beginning to feel just a little bit jealous - which is perhaps inappropriate given that I have the Lake District on my doorstep.  :-[

Thank you. Looks like there is a lot. I wasn't sure about trains yet, but if they run regularly I could do that.

Going north should be ok as this is on the West Highland Way?

Yeah the Lake District must be a good option then. I'm in London. Not much to do at the moment.

An Caisteal and Beinn A’ Chroin are 2 Munros about 4 km south of Crianlarich that can be joined up. I walked these in brilliant weather about 25 years ago. It was possible to lie down in warm sunshine next to a big snow patch, so we did. It was a long day driving down from Aberdeen and then back again after the walk.

Take a day to walk the West Highland Way to Tyndrum. Although a small village,
there are a couple of shops, a pub, fish n chip place, burger place.
Either walk back the same way (easy walking) or catch a bus/train back to Crnlch.
Enjoy it whatever you do......great place and fantastic scenery!

I walked Cruach Ardrain last year from there; it is steep and marshy in places took me 6 hours. On the second day I got the bus to Luss, ferry to Balmaha and climbed Conic Hill and visited Inchchailloch island. Returned on the same day. One of the best days I had last year. :)

Thank you, lots of things to do and I can see the other munros now.

I went to the Peak District last week, hopefully that prepared me a bit for it! :-)

Hi thank you again, I'm just reporting back :-)

I walked two sections of the West Highland Way from Crianlarich. One south until Loch Lomond, and one North until Bridge of Orchy. I also had a day walk to go up Ben More and Stob Binnein (that was quite hard), and a day around Bridge of Orchy. For the rainy days, I went to Loch Lomond and on a boat to the other side.

It was a great place overall.

What you need to do is use an image hosting website - I use imgbb.com - and copy the 'direct link' for the image into the "Enter image location" box that you refer to.
