Life of a Mountain: A Year on Scafell Pike
« on: 18:21:10, 02/02/21 »
England's highest mountain as seen by its farmers, climbers and conservationists.

BBC4 tonight (Tuesday) 9pm

Followed by The Great Mountain Sheep Gather - An epic journey from summit to valley as a shepherd gathers his sheep off Scafell Pike.

May be of interest to some.

Preceded by a classic Last of the Summer wine and Wallace & Gromit - a good night's TV

So many paths yet to walk, so little time left

I watched Secret Safari on Ch 4 at 8 before Scafell - tantalizing views of Mount Kenya in the background, about which I have been reading.

Enjoyed the Helvellyn prog more, to be honest - the Scafell Pike one could have done with being half an hour longer. Great viewing, though - Piers Gill one of my favourite routes, and my knees were trembling at the sight of the climber on Broad Stand.

I enjoyed watching it, especially the chat with Joss Naylor and Mark Richards.

I didn't know about an Octopus found at the summit of Scafell Pike, thought it was a joke but it certainly was found.

I reckon a bird dropped it as it flew over.......I can't imagine anyone carrying an Octopus to the top, or did they  :-\

Oh!  I just replied to the other topic  ;D

But yeah, I enjoyed the programme.  Not an area I'm familiar with at all.

It was on my Christmas List last year ... an excellent read.

Must re-read HW Tilman's account of his ascent with Eric Shipton.

Blencathra on tonight (2100 BBC4) - one of my favourite mountains. I shall be watching with special interest as my mother was evacuated to Threlkeld for a while during WWII - she will be watching, too!

I watched and enjoyed both the programmes last night, a two hour binge of Lakeland fell scenery.

The sooner travel beyond 'local' is allowed the better - I can't wait to get my hands (and feet) on the rock  :)

I think Blencathra has to be my favourite as well. It's 1hr 45mins from my door (traffic permitting) to Mungrisdale, so doesn't really count as local at present; cant wait to be unlocked for a trip across. Lots of missed time to chase, I guess the lesson is not to waste a day.  O0

Started re-watching the Blencathra film last night but got a bit down about not being able to be there, so switched off after about a minute.  Will watch it again once we have some sort of timeline and we can start getting excited again.

That is so true. So often in the past I have dithered over a less than perfect weather forecast when planning to climb a hill or visit one of the more remote Orkney islands, only for the weather to be decent on the day; an opportunity missed. In the case of Orkney (where I lived for 18 years), an opportunity not likely to arise again.  :(

So last summer (once we were allowed out), I packed a lot in, including some wild camps in some very iffy weather, including the mega thunderstorm. Got to grasp the moment and go for it.  :)
