I'm pretty new to hiking/trekking, and I'm trying to get my hands on an Ordnance Survey map of the Windermere area to plan a trip there. Anyone know any good websites or stores I can get sorted out? ???
Cheers, Andy

I think you probably want one of the outdoor leisure or explorer 1:25,000 OS maps. Amazon do these. I think OL7 covers Windermere though you can check by Googling for Ordnance Survey and looking at their website. If you don't want to use Amazon, most good bookshops, like Waterstones stock them or most outdoor shops like Decathlon, Ellis Brigham, Cotswold etc. Especially if they are branches within the lakes. Within the national park you can pick them up in cafes, newsagents and petrol stations.

Yep the 1:25000 maps (2.5 inches to a mile) are RRP £7.99 or £13.99 for the Active Map versions (coated with plastic for waterproofing) - but amazon does all cheaper.

Also if your lucky, you get them at your local library ;D

any good outdoors shop will sell them, try BLACKS/MILLETTS/NOMADS/YEOMANS/ELLIS BRIGHAMS,there usually around £7:99 and £13:99 for laminated maps,ok.

An excellent source of discounted OS maps is Guidepost (http://www.guidepost.uk.com/). They supply the complete range of OS maps, including laminated ones at a 10% discount and post free. They usually arrive within 2 days of ordering. They also do guide books and foreign maps. No minimum order either.

I tend to use Stanfords in London. They do all the usual maps, also the Harvey maps, and if you do any walking abroad they have just about everything that's available such as the excellent French IGN and the lousy Spanish maps.
I've not seen any military maps, which I gather it is possible to get. For example Greek maps are rubbish as they're scared that the Turks will get hold of them and invade, but there are reputed to be old (British Army I believe) WW2 maps available, which if you're walking in the wilds should be OK.
