Alcohol Stove for a quick cuppa
« on: 19:19:16, 17/02/21 »
Has anybody here got one of these ..

https://www.amazon.com/REDCAMP-Alcohol-Backpacking-Lightweight-Aluminium/dp/B0794NZXZG

Although I do have an MSR Pocket Rocket and gas, was thinking this alcohol stove would be lighter and perhaps good for a day hike, for a cuppa. of course, I could be wrong.

On AliExpress for about £7 with the stand and including delivery, I thought it is worth a try.

I know this is a copy (well, similar to) the popular Trangia stove but about half the price.

I wanted to post a picture, but was unable to do so .. said too many characters

I have a Trangia look alike....cheap and works very well. I also have several versions of the fancy feast style alcohol burners. I have made these with different height and diameter cans. I actually prefer these to the trangia style burner.

Make sure you use a windshield, you probably know that but just in case.

Hi Wbmkk if it's a day hike cuppa you're after then a flameless system is good. From my experience they do just what us needed, I'll say the whole kit for a day is competitive weight wise with any other system
Not really for a multi day hike as the cumulative weight of the heat sachets would start being a distinct disadvantage. I have used the kit on a three day walk up in the Barrowburn and to Cow Green and back, staying in the hut up on the cheviot ridge.

Check out Speedster Stoves. https://speedsterstoves.co.uk/index.php

I have just completed making my own meths stove, inspired by Speedster's design - the wind shield acts as the pot stand. I think that having a good windshield is critical to the success of an alcohol stove.

I use a small piece of foil beneath the stove for ground protection and heat reflection, maybe 1g added to weight.

Good tip. Was thinking of using a foil pie dish - after eating the pie first, of course!

That's what I use, cut to same radius or shape as pot support.

Thanks Peak, most interesting. http://zenstoves.net/Stoves.htm

I've made a simple open flame stove out of an aluminium tin 60mm in diameter; has a close fitting lid too. I say 'made', but all I did was grab a tuft of mineral wool insulation from the loft, and stuff it in. Simplicity itself, easy to fuel, no priming, spill proof, light as a feather (14g empty), and seems to do the job just fine when used with a close fitting windshield.
