A week in the lakes-where to stay?
« on: 20:49:35, 28/02/15 »
Hi we are trying to plan a week in the lakes district and having trouble pinpointing where to stay! Have 7 year old and want somewhere close to easyish short walks (preferably right outside the back door!) maybe a playground, castle nearby... Thanks!

Cpin, the major towns in the lake district are Keswick, Ambleside, Grasmere, Coniston and Patterdale. Easy walks would include catbells, walla crag from Keswick. Ambleside has loughrigg fell, Grasmere has helm crag plus lakes. Coniston has black and holme fell. Hope this helps, Henry

The problem with the towns is that they are towns.

What about Borrowdale YHA, for added excitement you could hire a camping pod. Loads of great walking either long or short, Castle Crag (not a real castle I know) no playground but you've got loads of space to run about, slate mine at Honister.

If you're camping then I'd go for Park Foot campsite near Pooley Bridge.

It's a good family campsite ( not cheap though ) but plenty of facilities to keep the whole family happy such as park, resteraunt, bar, tennis courts, take away food. Plenty of fields too - some right next to Ullswater.
There are some easy walks nearby - get in the car and you'll soon be at Patterdale, Helvellyn, Blencathra Aira Force waterfall, etc. There's a couple of castles close by as well as one or two stone circles.

When our kids were young we stayed there a lot as they could have the run of the place without too much supervision.

Camping place looks lovely but they don't allow dogs! :(
