Monopod as a walking stick? Anybody else?.
« on: 09:30:22, 20/04/15 »
I need to use a stick of some kind these days over uneven ground (old injuries) but I've taken to using my monopod as a walking stick, it telescopes short if I need to carry it, and I can ajust the length when going up or down climbs or steps.
And I can use it for it's intended use as a camera support.
Iwas wondering if anybody else does the same??

I've got the opposite, a walking pole that can be converted to a monopod by inserting a camera screw into the handle

I have had a telescoping walking stick / camera monopod for about 7 years now, it was made by a company called "Alptech" who's motto is" tested on the mountains of the world". The stick it'self is a 3 piece with antishock device built in, it has a spherical handle of approx 50 m/m Dia. which unscrews to reveal the standard camera screw attatchment and locking disc. all in all a good piece of kit if and when you want to steady a camera. (best of both worlds for me )

Apoligies, I should have said what a monopod was in the original post.

Mine is a old manfrotto model, it's heavy guage alloy in 3 sections, and extends to about 6 foot (roughly) The outer section on mine is wrapped in clingfilm and then duct/gaffer tape to provide some insulation when holding it on cold days. It also has a length of paracord tied to it so I can sling ir over my shoulder for any scrambles.

For those who don't know what a monopod is. It's essentially one leg of a camera tripod, usually with a ball and socket head, it's popular with wildlife and sports photographers who need to steady a long lens but haven't time to set up a tripod.

I'm supprised how cheap these are, I paid a lot more for the monpod.  The top links say it's also a camera tripod, is that a mistake and it should be monpod or is there a hidden tripod bit somewhere I wonder.  I might buy one to see if it's any good,  at that price I won't loose any sleep if I lose it or break it.

It actually says " Acts like a camera tripod" Not that it is one. It means it has the tripod screw to fix camera  :)

Yours looks a substantial bit of kit Wayne especially extending to 6'0". I've got a Hama Alpenpod http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hama-Alpenpod-Walking-Monopod-Cameras/dp/B002DOUXSA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430074172&sr=8-1&keywords=monopod+walking+stick which I used a lot until I tripped over and bent it  >:( . However it wasn't really tall enough!

I think  tallest one I've seen was the old Benbo monopod, it's built like a tank.
