Scafell Pike in the dark

I started this walk at 1.30am on Wednesday as part of the Three Peaks Challenge. I had already completed Snowdon on Tuesday night but I wasn't really looking forward to this. I find it a relentless slog from Seathwaite and I've not done much walking at night. The moon was bright but as I gained height visibility dropped to more or less nothing and couldn't even spot the cairns of the final approach until I just about tripped over them. Made it to the summit by 4am, and not surprisingly had the place to myself! There wasn't a breath of wind on the way up but it was a different story on top. Needless to say, it was a quick photo then down again through the fog. Got back to the car as dawn was breaking and it was on to Penrith to catch my lift to Fort William. Ben Nevis was absolute torture but I was up and down in under 5 hours and I completed the 'challenge' with 90 minutes to spare
